Great Actors?

visionquestOk, I get it. I'll just wait for your movie to come out then.

lol that has nothing to do with this discussion. Just because it didn't win an award doesn't mean it is underrated. It means it wasn't that great of a movie to begin with.visionquest wrote: Ok, I get it. I'll just wait for your movie to come out then. -

His name kept popping up last time we had this discussion and I don't get it; he's been in like five movies over the past 15 years? I would think you actually have to act to be considered a great actor.Daniel Day Lewis -

I mean, plenty of actors are in like 5 movies a year....and they all suck! -

Really though, what has he done?DeyDurkie5 wrote:

Don't get me wrong, I understand that; I realize just being famous and spitting out a bunch of movies doesn't make you great. But the really good actors can perform over and over.Laley23 wrote:

Quantity over quality. Just because he doesn't do a lot of movies doesn't mean he isn't unreal in just about every role he does, which in my opinion makes him one of if not the best actors out there right now. -

I agree with that. But at the same time, the guys in his line of work speak so highly of him. Leo, while on set of Gangs of NY, said he couldnt imagine being mentioned in the same breathe as DDL. This a guy who has been mentioned on this thread.BORIStheCrusher wrote:

DeNiro when given some award as the best actor of the last 20 years said he stole it from DDL. That is some high fucking praise from some of the best. I WISH he made more because of how great he is, but if his work were to suffer because of this it wouldnt be close to worth it. -
Trueblue23Will Smith, no doubt about it

I guess I'm looking at it like a backup QB who completes 80% of his passes. He might look great when you see him, but he's not playing full time like everybody else so the stats are going to be skewed. By the way I think Leo is near the top as far as actors go right now. He puts out good movies and does awesome in all of them.Laley23 wrote:

That's not really a good analogy, because a backup QB's performance frequency is limited by his coaches because they don't believe he has talent, Day-Lewis' performance frequency is limited by his own choosing, he could be in every film if he wanted to.BORIStheCrusher wrote:I guess I'm looking at it like a backup QB who completes 80% of his passes. A better analogy would be: a QB chooses to only play one season every few years, but every season he does choose to play he's the MVP of the league. Would anyone have a problem mentioning that player as one of if not they greatest QB in the game? -

DDL is very picky about his roles. His preparation for his roles is unmatched.
I read that to prepare for Last of the Mohicans, Day-Lewis learned how to hunt by shooting a musket, skinned the animals and learned to fish all the while living in the wilderness.

From the article
That is dedication that no other actor has shown us. This is what makes him great and also why he doesn't play every role thrown his way IMO.For Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans (1992), the actor was able to prepare for the role of James Fenimore Cooper's 18th-century hero Hawkeye by living off the land for six months, learning how to hunt, fish and skin animals. -
