The Doors

So I recently watched The Doors movie with Val Kilmer as Morrison and started listening to some of their music again. It had been awhile since I listened to any of their stuff.

What do you think about The Doors? Morrission?

To me Morrisson is probably in the Top 5 Frontmen in history. Stage Prescense, Charisma, Very Good Voice. Im not sure where I rank the Band overall but some of my favorite songs

    Roadhouse Blues
    Alabama Song
    Unknown Solider
    LA Woman
    Riders On The Storm.

Big fan of the Doors, and when we were in Paris last year, one of our first stops was Pere Lachaise cemetary to visit Jim Morrison's grave. Cool stuff.

Yeah I used to be into the Doors big time. I still listen to them every once in a while but not as much. I've watched the movie and I thought it was okay, but I know that a lot of people associated with the band, hate the movie and say it is really inaccurate.

^^^Kudos for being 22 years old and having so many ties with a band that old^^^

I, too, am a long time fan, but--as with every "deceased" group--it's tough to keep the love with no new stuff coming out.

Movie was outstanding ("DEAD DUCK!! DEAD!! DEAD!!!" "Fuck it--let's eat this thing")! Kyle Maclachlan with a very passable Manzarek. Cameo by Danny Sugerman, who wrote "No One Here Gets Out Alive." Cameo by Billy Idol. Crispin Glover as Andy Warhol.

    My top five songs:

    1) Light My Fire (though the 7:14 long version is tedious with the long organ/guitar interlude)
    2) The very underrated Moonlight Drive
    3) Touch Me
    4) Break on Through (Great studio version, and always enjoyed the various live versions I've heard over the years)
    5) The innocent, idyllic Love Street

    HM) LA Woman.

There is a new Doors documentary called When You're Strange and apparently it has a good amount of never before seen footage.

I've heard it shows that there was no part of Morrison that could be considered sane. He would break down and go on random rants on stage and the band would need to improv and keep the show going. The band was amazing and how they kept it together for that long is beyond me.

It's weird to see a band that was only really big 4 years is still generating this much interest.

Haha funny how leaving one word out changes the whole context of a sentence.

I have plenty of their music

I think they're more interesting than good. I think the musicianship is really great. I just can't stand Morrison's writing, a lot of what he seemed to try and give off vs. what he actually was. It's all accounts off of accounts, I know, but...I just can't get into it. I do think they were such an interesting band of players, though. With no Bass player, great keyboard playing, and I think Robbie Krieger is a totally unique guitar player.

It was a critical disaster, but my favorite album is probably The Soft Parade. I guess that probably speaks to the fact that Morrison contributed to that album probably the least.

While not my favorite Doors album, The Soft Parade is indeed an interesting contribution from the band. In a very outside-the-box way, it reminds me a bit of Nirvana's In Utero, in that you could hear and feel the demise and breaking down of Morrison in this album (similar to Cobain in IU).

Pretty good book. I read it a few years back. I agree with another poster who said that Morrison may have well been crazy. (I still have to laugh about some of the stories out there)

Yeah, most people I've encountered either love them or hate them. You usually don't find too many people in the gray area. However, I will say that I agree with you on the actual words to songs...not all that great of song writing. However, what they lacked in that area they made up for in performance, showmanship etc. One of the bands that I really wish I was around to see live. Their shows were an unorthodox, sometimes crazy, yet satisfying mix of aesthetics, experimentation, and insanity lol. Much like Morrison himself. He was really a polarizing figure, and a person who was very hard for people to relate to, yet you just couldn't resist him. Very, very unique band, but a very critical part in the history of American rock n roll IMO. Without bands like The Doors, and several others of the time, there would be several major bands that would not have had the road paved for them that they did over the last 40 years. I guess to sum it up, you would have to say that some like them, some dislike them, but they should be acknowledged and respected for bringing to the forefront a different perspective on what rock music as a medium could do, both for band/artist(s) and listeners alike.

I've never fallen in love with The Doors. I'm more of a Stones/Clapton/Dylan guy, but I enjoy "The End."

I'm sure if I delved deeper I'd find more songs I appreciate.

Not a fan (I respect the band and their contributions)... I just find the whole vibe, musically and lyrically very depressing.

I knew my daughter's boyfriend was an ok guy when I discovered his love for The Doors. We're big fans at our house.
