krambmanWhat's your definition of extensive?
I'm no pro, but I've done quite a bit in my day editing family videos and things for my church, camp, youth group, etc. -
ott75Just looking to edit together a baseball highlight video maybe to some music with stats. Would it be better to go ahead and burn the videos on to a DVD then edit from the DVD or to edit straight from the HD Camcorder?
-
AppleI'd use an easy editing program like windows moviemaker or iMovie on the mac.
-
gorocks99I'd edit straight from a hard drive if it's at all possible. What editing program are you using?
-
ott75I have no editing program that I know of

Best place ever if you really want to learn about editing videos/effects.
This applies to Adobe After Effects/Premiere Pro which are available everywhere for about ten million dollars or for free from various corners of the internet.
For basic editing I usually find Windows Movie Maker to be okay. Especially the latest versions for Vista/Windows 7. Though I still prefer the control that the Adobe products give you. -
capninsanoEdit straight from the camcorder using your firewire cable. Windows media player will be able to capture the video that way and you won't lose any quality like you will if you put it on DVD first.

If he's using a camera with a hard drive he'll be using a USB cable and will transfer the video directly. You only need firewire and video capture if using a DVD or Mini DV camcorder.capninsano wrote: Edit straight from the camcorder using your firewire cable. See if you can find a copy of Windows Movie Make (if on a PC). If your computer isn't ancient or running Windows 7, then it show have come with WMM. It's easy to use and probably the best way to go if you've never done any editing before. Pinnacle Studio is probably the easiest to learn and use if you want to buy something inexpensive (-$100).
