What made you start rooting for the team you do?

  • newarkcatholicfan
From the high school level up to the pro level.
What turned you into being the fan you are for the teams you are?
  • Cleveland Buck
Watching the teams from the city/state where I lived and came from.
  • newarkcatholicfan
All of the pro teams I follow I have followed since I first started watching sports.
As for high school there is two reasons I root for Newark Catholic first.
1-Has something to do with something that happened to my brother while at Lakewood
2-In a way my passion for Newark Catholic football in a small way according to my doctor saved my life when they the doctors had pretty much told my family, I was not going to make it.

My Fathers influence. Didnt you start another thread asking about the same thing?
  • GoChiefs
    High School..my alma mater.
Michigan..because the rest of my family were Buckeye fans.
    Kurt Busch..long story.
Browns & Reds..not sure..I'd say b/c when I started watching the sports..my friends were already fans of theirs..so I kinda was just drawn towards them.

Basically, but these are usually good threads.

He could be starting trolling threads.

    Isn't this a repeat thread?

The other thread.."Do you root for the same teams as your father"..this thread.."What made you start rooting for the team you do". Unless you started rooting for the teams you do b/c of your father..then obviously no, not the same thread.

    Buckeyes- Raised to like them.
Yankees- Lost a bet with a friend about 15 years ago, and been a fan ever since.
Cavs- Only team close to me, only became a real fan since Lebron(not afraid to admit it)
Don't have a favority NFL team, usually just like players, more than teams.

OSU because I'm from Ohio, my dad is an alum, and I'm also an alum.

Cleveland teams because I support the local teams and I'm not a front running bandwagon chaser.

    High school:
    - Westerville South(my alma mater) in anything other than boy's basketball when they play Westerville Central.
    - Westerville Central boy's and girl's basketball. I played for the coach while he was at South(JV), he is my mentor and a close friend, and I was an asst. there for the better part of 3 years. Girl's: the coach was an asst. with the boy's, great guy.

    College:
    - OSU - only team that was ever on in the house growing up.
    - UNC Basketball - I couldn't tell ya, but I know I started to really follow them in the early 90s. Basically when I realized what made the program what it was, I fell in love with Carolina. While I'm not nearly as big of a fan of the rest of the teams there, I do cheer for them.
    - Syracuse Basketball - Since Melo. I also have a great respect for Boeheim and what he does with the zone D. Not to mention he is a cancer survivor.

    Pro:
    - I was a Michael Jordan fan growing up, not a fan of any team. When he retired for the 2nd time from the Bulls, I had no team. My best friend was a Lakers fan, I guess you could say his fandom of them rubbed off on me. Been with them ever since.
    - Cowboys - pretty much the same as Carolina basketball.
    - Reds - I think it was because almost every single year for Little League we were the Reds. I was also a Mariners fan because of Junior.

    - Also, I cheer for the newer teams here in Columbus, the Jackets and the Crew. I think it is great for the city when they are winning and playing well.

This is most likely my longest post ever.

    OK, you win....I think

I'll just take this opportunity to say: support your area teams!

    Thank you in advance.

To each their own!! I cannot understand born and raised in Ohio being a Cowboys, UNC Basketball or Lakers fan? I respect the Eastern Ohio ppl rooting for Pitts teams. many times they are geographically closer to them.

Being an OSU fan and a UNC BBL fan doesnt sit well. The reason you dont follow UNC football is bc they havent won anything.

H.S. Indian Creek- My alma mater
College Ohio State- What I grew up watching on TV
Pro Denver Broncos- Saw John Elway catch a pass in the Super Bowl and thought it was the coolest thing
Hockey Pittsburgh- Only Pittsburgh team I root for. My sister took me to a game when I was young and was hooked.

Most people cheer for the same teams are their parents right? You said you do. My parents did not cheer for any team other than OSU. Therefore it was up to me to decide who I wanted to cheer for.

There's no rule or law saying because I'm from Ohio, I have to be a Cavs, Browns, Bengals, Indians or Toledo Mud Hens fan.

And why does being an OSU fan and a Carolina fan not sit well?? And I don't follow Carolina football in depth is because they aren't on TV up here so it's difficult to follow them.

I like the Browns and Cavs primarily because growing up on the North Central Ohio those were the teams, and those are the only two sports I cared about. In terms of college I have liked UC from the time I kept sneaking downstairs when I was supposed to be in bed to watch Danny Fortson and Co. deliver a massive beat down of some poor C-USA fool in 96 or 97. I am going to graduate from UC in june. The only other big rooting interest I have is FC Barcelona. started following the champions leauge and European Football in general when I started college and Barcelona appealed to me because of the way they play the game. It was only after picking them as my side that I started to look into the history of the club and came to realize what Barca means to Catalonia. As the saying goes "More than a club." Like a lot of different teams, but those are the only one's whose losses put me in a bad mood.

High School: fan of New Albany and Grove City Christian
Reason - I graduated from New Albany and my best friend coaches football at GCC.

College: Ohio State and Boise State
Reason - I'm from Ohio and my parents currently live in Idaho.

    NFL: Cowboys
Reason - I have an uncle who lives in Dallas and he sent me a Cowboys t-shirt for Christmas when I was young before I was a sports fan, been rooting for the 'Boys ever since.

    MLB: Yankees
Reason - I never really had a favorite baseball team and I worked for the Clippers on summer when they were still the Yankee's AAA squad, so I figured I'd root for them and several players I knew (like Cano) got called up while I worked there.

    NBA: Cavs
Reason - My favorite player is Shaq so I've always just rooted for whoever he played for. I will likely remain a Cavs fan when he retires

    NHL: Blue Jackets
Reason - I live in Columbus

    MLS: Crew
    Reason - See Blue Jackets

I was born in the Ohio Valley area, and like many there, my rooting interest lie with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh was about 45 minutes away from my hometown, so it is definitely much closer to Cleveland or Cincinnati. Being born in the early 1970's, I got to cut my teeth on the great Pittsburgh sports teams of the 1970's.

Like 3reppom, I root for UC. I am a UC graduate. The reason I chose to go to UC was because my dad was in the Air Force and stationed at Wright-Patt at the time. UC is a whole heck of a lot closer to Wright Patt than Pitt or Wheeling Jesuit. In my freshmen year at UC, I watched Nick Van Exel, Herb Jones and Company lead the Cats to the Final Four. During the years I was there, we went to the Elite Eight on two more occasions and a Sweet Sixteen. The UC basketball team was one of the first to emphasize strength and conditioning. As a result, we physically over matched and intimidated a lot of our opponents. There was an identity to the program. Boy do I miss those days of UC dominance. The UC Football team was awful when I was there, but I have some fun personal memories gong to a few of the games. They actually did get a little better after I left there. Ironically, I have been to a whole heck of a lot more games post graduate than when I was a student.

That is going to become more common. It is nearly impossible to get a student ticket anymore. I know a few people who couldn't make but one or two games this year but are already on the line for season tickets next year.

It has always been proximity for me.
