Cell Phones at School

What is the policy at your School with regard to cell phones? At GAHS they have caused some serious problems for teachers.... Just wondering how other schools deal with this.. And if you do have a policy what is the punishment for violating the policy???

Kids are not supposed to have them turned on at our school, but they do. A few years ago I was looking at our Verizon bill and saw that my son was texting during school hours like it was his job. I called and had his texting turned off. He called me not five minutes afterwards complaining that his phone didn't work. (Mind you, he's at school.) I asked him how did he know it wasn't working when he was at school and it should be shut off. Stupid kids.

IMO, cell phones should not be allowed at school, period.

Our school's policy is that they have to stay in your locker. But of course it gets abused, and then you just end up with kids texting in the hallway.

It's the parents who hand their kids a phone and don't know the consequences of when and where they will use it as well as not understanding the features of the device. I don't have a problem with the kids having them! In this day and age it's safe to do so however they don't need to access the Internet or text. Simply phone calls!

Let them have them at school but they need to be turned off. Putting them in the lockers not always a good decisions due to theft. but they should be off from first to last bell.
I think it is great that if I am running late from work or something I can call leave my child a message and know they got it. I also like when my kid is in sports if for one reason or another they can call me for when I need to pick them up.

Elementary kids on the other hand I don't think they should even have a phone.

A 7 year old with a cell phone?

    Really?!?

I shouldn't be surprised though - with the age of keeping up with the Jones's and Instant Gratification.

I graduated from HS about 4 years ago, small school.. and there wasnt a lot of cell phone use then..Now, I hear the cell phones are used by everyone and all the time. Mostly for chatting and cheating... not "hey mom come pick me up," like it use to be.

I have put a program on my kids cell phone that I get a copy of every text message sent and received. cuts down on the chatting a lot and no cheating with my kids phone.

When I was at Salem the policy was that they could be carried by the students, but were to remain off unless there was an emergency.

Don't have to worry about this in college. Just as long as your phone doesn't ring and you're not obviously texting in front of a lecturing professor(even then some of them don't care) you'll be fine. I've had professors answer cell phones during class.
