Whats the better fantasy movie series?

  • bigdaddy2003
What do you guys think? I have a buddy who says that Star Wars and Lord of the Rings are both lame but he goes to the theater and watches every Harry Potter and buys the dvd the day it comes out lol.

Star Wars isn't really fantasy is it?

But anyway, out of the three I prefer LOTR.

    LOTR

Based on the question Star Wars. the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter films are very very good and well done, but both are derivative of other peoples work. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings should always be judged in literary terms because that is the arena in which they have had the greater cultural impact.

Actually all three follow the classic hero story line monomyth according to Joseph Campbell.

Lord Of The Rings without a question.

How is it Lord of the Rings without question? I'm shocked there were 9 votes for LOTR and only 2 for Star Wars. Star Wars was revolutionary. I don't really view LOTR as "revolutionary."

LOTR, but it's still early in the life of the series. there is plenty of time for it to be bastardized like Star Wars.

Its a poll on what the better movie series was not what was more revolutionary. I too voted for LOTR.

Rings...what made it my favorite is the fact that all three parts were filmed at the same time at the same location, which made the trilogy seamless--Peter Jackson at his best!!!

Because it's not asking which movie series was 'ahead of it's time'. It's asking what the better one was. And IMO..LOTR was far by than Star Wars. And yes, I am a Star Wars fan.

Original Star Wars is much better/entertaining than LOTR. Frodo is one of the most annoying bastards I have ever seen, haha. Good movies, but for pure enjoyment, give me Harrison Ford.

  • End of Line
    Star Wars=Sci Fi

    LOTR=Fantasy

Okay my bad about putting fantasy in the title. I wasn't even thinking about grouping Star Wars in the sci-fi genre for some reason. Just answer which you think is better.

I am a Star Wars fan as well, in fact my first memory was watching the original in 1977 at the theater.

Problem is, the new movies stunk. There's no way of getting around it. They were terrible. If nothing else the LOTR films showed how you can take a simple story and make it into great films.

I thought Phantom Menace was alright and Revenge Of The Sith was pretty good.

Lord Of The Rings was a pretty solid trilogy. I am excited for The Hobbit to come out next year.

If we were talking the original Star Wars films, I would probably put it ahead but the newest 3 were not that good. All 3 LOTR were very good and for that they are better than the 6 Star Wars films.

Im probably one of the biggest Harry Potter fans on this site and I just can not vote for them sure the movies are good but they are not as good as the LOTR movies. Now if we went by books then HP would have my vote!

lotr. i love the original three star wars to death but the lotr was dead on which is hard to do when trying to make a book into a movie.

LOTR was ok...but this is Star Wars. I think too many people voting on this poll have a short memory.

yes all three follow a well established arc that has been a hallmark of epic literature for millenia. Thats not my point, that type of story has been the cultural backbone for societies across the world. My point was that the Star Wars universe was developed exclusively for film. Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter weren't. They undoubtedly work as films but the intention of Rowling and Tolkien was never to write books that could make the transition from print to film

    Older poster here:

Read the LOTR in the mid 70's. Loved the books and made a mental image of the books that I carried for years. Then I saw Star Wars in 77 and was blown away. I have been a Star Wars fan ever since.
Then the LOTR movies came out. It was if the movies had copied my mental image. I am even more so a LOR fan now than I was when I read the books 35 years ago.
Taking a book with a rabid and devoted fan base and turning it into a movie that is so enjoyable and faithful to the book shows really talent. Very few times has this been done in other book to movies translations. One of the few times that a movie I have seen moved me to a standing ovation.

My vote is still for LOTR as the better fantasy series.

For the record I have always considered Star Wars science fiction, not fantasy :)

I voted for Star Wars but I think LOTR is right there with it!

ZeroCool while I would agree that LOTR was very close to the book, I wouldn't say it was dead on. I believe you will be hard pressed to find Arwen in the book and or her and Aragorn's love. Also the ending is nothing like the book if we want to start a discussion about accuracy.
