Folk/Acoustic/Alternative Bands

Along the lines of bands/singers such as Iron & Wine, City and Colour, Ryan Adams, and Dustin Kensrue, what are some other good music choices I should check out?
  • I Wear Pants
Kevin Devine. Absolutely must check him out. He's probably in my top five as far as musicians go and definitely my favorite lyricist.

Check out Fleet Foxes. They are a sort of crosby/stills/nash version of what you have named. I love them.

also check out Chuck Ragan, same as above, good solo stuff, is/was the singer for Hot Water Music. Don't know his myspace from memory but he's probably in the top friends of Tim Barry, I'd also check out any other musicians on tim barrys top friends
  • The Giss
Don't know if they are still around, but a band out of Athens, ohio called Stella put otu a pretty good CD a few years back. It was called Pony Girl.

    Blitzen Trapper

I'll second the Blitzen Trapper & Fleet Foxes recommendations, both are tremendous bands.

I'd also recommend Blind Pilot, Elliot Brood (more bluegrassy than other bands listed), & Okkervil River...

    Silverspun Pickups

    really like the Decemberists
whenever I listen to their albums, it seems like the soundtrack to a musical that hasn't been produced yet.

the dude from Iron & Wine has done some acoustic sets with the Shins...some cool tracks.

if your taste veers toward blue-grass/alt-country...Zac Brown Band which got some nice face time at the Grammy's...their stuff goes much deeper than the few songs you heard that night.

Wilco are pretty well known by now...but still gotta throw their name in the hat.

just thought of a way you could find out bands like that, i do this all the time, but i spend alot of time listening to music so its easy for me.

if you have time, sitting on computer or just doin whatever and can have internet radio on then this works.

go to www.last.fm and click on radio, then search one of the bands you like, example City And Colour, and it will play "city and colour radio" which will include songs by then and artist that are similar to them. you can skip songs if you dont like it but it gives you the artist/release and a little bio of the band.

Thanks for the recommendations, I've been checking a few of them out. I've been really into the more mellow folk/acoustic stuff lately. Thanks again.

Last.fm is also available on the Xbox 360 if that's your bag.
