Ladies....does it have to be a diamond for engagement?
-
Belly35The wife and I years ago (39 years) when the traditional way with a Diamond. Not a bad investment both from a personal and material value.
She loves sapphire (Blue) and she just purchase a Black Diamond cluster ring.
Both rings she can wears with her wedding ring, making nice differences to plain look of a Diamond wedding ring.
I think that a quality gem (don’t go cheap) and classic styling imaging your taste and personality is proper for today engagement and wedding ring. Diamonds are nice but remember the engagement/ wedding ring is reflection of the love of each other so what make you (the bride) happy should be the first consideration when making this decision. -
SageI always get a chuckle out of this. People who need a symbol to show their love, I would argue, aren't really in love in the first place and shouldn't get married.
If I was truly in love, which I never will be, I wouldn't need anything... Especially a ring. Their love would simply be enough.
Women who make demands on their rings... Well... That's a red flag, gentlemen. But don't say Papa Sage didn't try to warn you. -

An engagement ring is a symbol of betrothment and commitment, not of love.Sage wrote: I always get a chuckle out of this. People who need a symbol to show their love, I would argue, aren't really in love in the first place and shouldn't get married.

FatHobbitI'd go with whatever makers you happy.
-
SageAgain, shouldn't your commitment and betrothment (aka love) trancend something man-made like jewelry?
-
LJ
Yes and no. An engagement ring in itself is a symbol dating back almost 700 years. I think personal agreement and selection of the ring should be something that should not be placed above your love for one another.Sage wrote: Again, shouldn't your commitment and betrothment (aka love) trancend something man-made like jewelry?
Also, betrothment and commitment are not aka love, lol. Love is a factor in getting engaged, but getting engaged is not a factor of love. -
bamagirlI like the look of blue stones. I am not much of a pink girl myself. But as long as it isn't yellow gold, and is either white gold or platinum I don't really mind.
The boyfriend and I have similar taste, I know he will pick out something I like. -
SageI guess I would see berothment and commitment as something that would fall under the definition of true love among life partners.
Obviously, if I was truly in love with something, I wouldn't need a manmade piece of metal to symbolize my commitment to her. -
SageWhy would you care if it was yellow gold, if you loved him, bamagirl?
-
HereticGirl best be happy with an onion ring. Lot more value in a good batch of those than in any stone.

Holy crap! I actually agree with Sage? I have somewhat the same view on marriage in general too. I don't need a piece of paper to prove i love someone and am 100% committed to them.Sage wrote: Again, shouldn't your commitment and betrothment (aka love) trancend

Also never really understood women actually picking out their own ring, or 'upgrading' rings... Just plain odd to me. -
bamagirl
I don't need a ring to signify our love. I actually wouldn't really care if I got a ring. I would want a wedding band though.Sage wrote: Why would you care if it was yellow gold, if you loved him, bamagirl? -
SageWell you clearly care, if you already know what kind of ring you want and which you don't want. If you didn't care... You wouldn't have thought about it.
-
bamagirl
Honestly, other than not yellow gold I know nothing of what I want. I don't like anything yellow gold, hence where that choice came from.Sage wrote: Well you clearly care, if you already know what kind of ring you want and which you don't want. If you didn't care... Fly4FunTalking about diamonds eh? Just hypothetical?
I need more details of some sort. -

I'm getting engaged to myself, and my other personality is nervous about getting something I'll like so I was gathering some style suggestionsFly4Fun wrote: Talking about diamonds eh? Just hypothetical?

Fab4RunnerI haven't really thought about what kind of ring I want. I want my engagement to be a complete surprise so there will be no ring shopping, etc. Hopefully my future husband has good taste! Haha.

Hmmmmm, for some reason I feel like one of you is lying to me.sej wrote:

SageSo u wouldn't like a yellow gold engagement ring the love of ur life got u? Smh.

Not to answer for bamagirl, but if he was the love of my life he'd likely know I don't like yellow gold, nor do I ever wear yellow gold.Sage wrote: So u wouldn't like a yellow gold engagement ring the love of ur life got u? Smh. -

You need love to marry someone, but you do not need to marry someone to be in love.Sage wrote: I guess I would see berothment and commitment as something that would fall under the definition of true love among life partners.

bamagirl
Thanks SEJ. First of all I doubt a man who loves you is going to purposefully get you something he knows you don't like...and if he does well maybe it isn't meant to be.sej wrote:

It's like your significant other buying you a horrible sweater....except you aren't going to be expected to wear that sweater the rest of your life.
You make me sound as if the only reason I am dating him is because I one day might get a ring. I don't expect it to be a huge ring...I actually hate big rings and would kick him for spending a crazy amount of money. The "love of my life" knows me, knows what I like. Like I said I know he will pick out something I will love. -
Fab4Runner
Well I won't lie he is great in the sack, haha. I really have no idea if I will get married or not. If so it's still years away.Fly4Fun wrote:
