Blackberry Messenger (BBM)

  • Fab4Runner
Yeah I have that version and have seen the barcode stuff....thanks for explaining! I'd be interested if it ever gets going.

The best part about BBM is there is no character limit. So the 160 characters that SMS has is no more. I perfer to use BBM when I can. Feel free to add me ifanyone wants. 3053fd6e.

The only downside to groups are that depending on your phone and it can really freeze it up

Thanks to oberhouse for BBM with me, I had no contacts before that. I see I'm on 4.5 OS so I'll need to update to 5.0 before I can try some of the other neat stuff.

The bar code stuff - can someone explain a bit more on that? Is it like Redlaser on iPhones where you can scan bar codes for books and find out which library and/or bookstores near you have it? or what types of bar codes is it for? Oh, is it to scan another phone and pick up their pin to add them as a BBM ??

Guess I'll try to update my phone now.

For twitter access i use UberTwitter and like it a lot. I had another twitter app that I didn't like very well but I don't recall the name. I have added some of the apps people have mentioned on her - Poynt, Viigo, scores (which was working but hasn't seemed to for a few days, need to try it again)

I have a curve 8330, I don't think I can do the scan thing with it - doesn't it have to be one of the "bigger" Blackberrys for that?
  • muffy
Ok - I'm an idiot. I got an invitation to the freehuddle blackberry group and I can't figure out how to accept the invitation.... I have 1 contact on my "list" and I hate to bug him with all my stupid questions...

WHOA!!!! I did it!! All by myself, just like a big girl!!!! I scanned the icon someone posted on here and it created the group. I thought i would have to "view" it and click something but it did it all on it's own. cool.

Now I just have to figure out what I do with it since I have it on my phone..... the group, I mean.

    Couple "generic" questions...

    1) I downloaded UberTwitter from App World - thus it's under My World - and I didn't really care for it so I uninstalled it. My "problem" is it still shows up under My World with all the other apps I have installed, except it reads "uninstalled" (which it should be). How do I delete this, however, as I am someone of an obsessive compulsive person and I do not like seeing it show up in My World even though it is uninstalled.

    2) How can I connect my BlackBerry to my laptop? I would like to be able to do this so I can manage my calendar appointments and contacts from my laptop with a mouse and bigger screen. I have the USB cord, but when I connected it, while the drive showed up under my computer, when I clicked on the folder it was empty.

    3) Under Applications on my BlackBerry, there is Word/Sheet/Slideshow To Go. I can click on each of these and then I am prompted with "Open a file..." I click on this and then I am prompted with "Media Card" and "Device Memory". If I click on "Media Card" I then have "BlackBerry" and "music" to choose from. Under "BlackBerry" there is a documents folder. If I open this folder, there is nothing in there. a) How do I get a clean document and b) how do I move documents from my laptop to this location?

I have had my curve for about a year, love it!! I am looking into upgrading soon...not sure what route I want to go.

As far as BBM I rarely use it. I do have a few contacts on there though.

You can't. They do this b/c if you installed it once you might want to install it later. It's suppose to make it "easier" for you.

you need to install Desktop Manager. Go to the blackberry website and it should help you out.

I assume you want to connect your calendar and contacts via outlook? If that's the case then google blackberry outlook or if you want to use the gmail functions, there's a ton of apps.

One thing I would be careful of is that if you already have contacts on your phone and on gmail, it can ugly, you may want to delete contacts on either phone or gmail and then transfer them all either way.

Well, this I'm not exactly sure of but:
when you get sent a word doc, excel doc, or power point you can open it with the To Go programs.

I think there is a way to use Desktop Manager to put files on, but I'm not 100% sure.

One thing to know though, is in your media folder or just one of the icons you should have a "files" option like "music" or "pictures" if you click that you can explore all your files like you would on windows.

If you need more help, let me know and I'll do examples and post them.

Wow. Thanks for the great response! I truly appreciate it.

As for the 2nd part, I am more interested in connecting my calendar to gmail currently (presently I do not use Outlook but since it is so widely used I can assume that sometime in the near future I may want to sync my calendar with Outlook. Is there a way to sync them both?!)

I haven't gotten into downloading Desktop Manager yet, but I plan on doing so sometime in the near future. I'm sure I will probably be in touch with you once I have further questions. Hope you do not mind.

    http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/

And you can sync both I believe. I've never done outlook and since you aren't looking to do it right now, I don't feel like looking it up. :) Xbox is calling my name!

Anyways, as I said, the syncing can be messy. If I were to sync these two again I would do this:(i have more contacts on my phone than my gmail) I would go through my gmail contacts make sure their information is on my phone and deleted the contact, do it for all of them. Then sync.

    ORRRR

If you have a lot on both. Find the ones that you know are on both, and delete on one of the platforms(gmail or BB). Also, in gmail make sure your contacts have names and not just email addresses listed otherwise you'll have a contact "[email protected]" and to me that is very annoying.

And I have no problem helping.

To both of these, you can always scan the group barcode I posted on the previous page. Easiest(and coolest) way IMO.

Unless they don't have BBM 5.0. You can't scan with the old version.

if they don't have 5.0 I don't think they can do groups?
