Any guitar experts here?

Someone I know came into possession of a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar. There is a serial # on it somewhere (not sure where), but not a model #. Any idea how to find out what it's worth? Thanks in advance for any help.

Type that serial number into google with "fender stratocaster" and see what comes up. I can't believe there's not a model number on it. I'd be weary of these things. People fake that stuff all the time. If your friend "came into possession" of it, I'd be weary of that too.

Plus, it depends on where it was made. An American made Strat is going to be worth a lot more than a Jap Strat for instance.

^^ bingo. A mexican strat is the current low end for Fender strats, they usually run between say 380-500, while an american can start at 900 and go all the way up to a couple grand for the deluxe and special models. Can you post a pic?

The serial number should be on the back of the headstock, but I'm not sure where the model number is. My Les Paul only has a serial number visible at least externally. I think it may be in the wood in the cavity under the pickups, but I wouldn't mess with it if you don't know what you're doing. There probably should have been some kind of form when it was originally bought that had all the info on it.

On second thought I don't know if the serial number is there on a strat since they have different tuners. All my experience is with a gibson or knockoffs of them.

I saw it and it looks real. The body looks to be Mother of Pearl maybe? It is a beautiful guitar and very heavy. The serial # is on the back of the neck I believe (I really wasn't looking for it myself). I will pass along the info everyone, so thanks.

Oh, and btw, the guitar is from a relative that died unexpectedly. So any info died with them. So far no paperwork can be found and nothing is known about where it was purchased, or when, etc.

PS: Sorry, I have no way to post a pic, but I could maybe describe it if that would help.

    Is it by chance lefthanded?

That would be nice, for whoever is trying to sell it, that is. Depending on the year it is.

Any guitar store should be able to tell you what you actually have. The construction on the American version is different.

True, yeah....taking it to someone (knowledgeable) at any Guitar Center-ish kind of place should help.

I mean, maybe not Guitar Center, but I don't know what you have where you're at. Here in Columbus, there's specific guitar places, etc.

They are in the Wintersville area. More info, the guitar is stamped "Made in the USA Corona, CA'. I have the serial # now, so I went to the Fender site and tracked down the model by matching the serial # to their list. Seems it's an American Deluxe model circa '98 or '99. MSRP is $1,999. Here is the link to the pic http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0101202700. If my memory serves me correctly, except for the coloring, this is a match. So at least there's a starting point to know what it's worth. Thanks again to everyone for the help!

Did any of you who replied to my question click the link to the pic? I was curious what anyone thought of it. I suggested maybe selling it on ebay, but didn't know what the bid price should be. Any insight would be appreciated.

Remove the period in your link. Can't see the search unless you remove it.

Dang, I'll take it for 200 bucks lol. Poor right now.

And I think the joke devil's advocate was making was because he said he "came" into a guitar, lol.
