Who Doesn't know how to swim?
-
GblockI was watching HBO real sports and they did an expose on a boy who drowned down south somewhere and they gave some interesting stats such as that if you are black you are three times more likely to drown than if you are white.
So i started thinking about people that i know and i dont know any white people who cant swim....i do have several black friends who cant swim including one of my frat brothers who almost drown in a jump off the bridge into the pond during senior week....
so who cant swim? -
Con_AlmaSomeone who can't swim doesn't mean they don't know how. I would bet most people know how.
-
LJI can tread water a bit and swim underwater a tiny bit. Other than that, can't swim.

GblockCONALMA ....
Huh? im not sure i follow....
by cant swim i mean if you fall in the water you sink....
either thru fear or lack of abilty to keep your head above the water w/out drowning -
Upper90I can't.
Though, I plan to take swimming lessons this summer. Seriously. -

I had a bad experience with an extremely gay swim instructor when I was a kid. He never touched me or anything, just extremely freaked me out and I never went back to lessons or had any interest in being able to swim laps. -

Having the knowledge of what to do and being able to perform it are two different things, no? -
cbus4lifeYou know what he means, don't be a douche.
-
Con_AlmaWas that directed to me??
If so...I knew exactly what he meant and then expanded on it with my own opinion. He said he didn't follow my post so I rephrased. -
Gblocki am talking about the performance....but theoretically if you cant perform the act of swimming i would say that you dont know "HOW"
i cant play the piano but i know how people play it... -
Con_AlmaYeah...we disagree.
-
WebsurfinbirdIf you can't swim, you should learn, it's a basic survival skill I would say. At the very least, learn how to tread water.
This thread is bringing me back to my days of lifeguarding up at camp. Ah the memories .... -
Gblocki swim really well but my confidence almost got me drowned at the new river we went rafting and the last rapid of the day is called swimmers rapid and they say if your a good swimmer you can go thru it without the raft... all my friends did it so i gave it a try.....a minute later i was getting slammed against the rocks and was trapped for about 30 secs....i was pretty shook up but made it out ok thank goodness.
-
Fly4FunI swam in high school and college, so I do alright...
Actually, I'm glad I'm a strong swimmer... it allows me to do certain without fear... such as white water kayaking, swimming out far in the ocean, pretty much being comfortable when surrounded by water in general.
I've taught some friends how to swim better, and I've taught some friends how to swim (couldn't swim at all). It's a good skill to have... and yes, black individuals are far more likely to not know how to swim, and some of that is just because of a lack of opportunity to learn. -

Ok, just thought you were trying to be difficult.Con_Alma wrote: Was that directed to me??

Well you make it seem like that on here, I wasn't calling you out just pointing out that it is somewhat comical hahaLJ wrote:

as far as the gay instructor....i'm sorry -
se-alumI honestly don't know how someone "can't swim". It has to be a fear of water, because it's not like the act of swimming is difficult.

I make it seem like that? How so? I don't claim anything like that... Hell there are a lot of threads on here that I know nothing about. Maybe it's just because I am vocal and confident in what I do know?DeyDurkie5 wrote:

Swamp FoxIt depends on your definition of "swimming". It's not pretty but I might be able to tread water and thrash around long enough to attract someone's attention.

Yes, kind of.se-alum wrote: I honestly don't know how someone "can't swim". It has to be a fear of water, because it's not like the act of swimming is difficult.
It's a fear of the water in the sense that they are uncomfortable. If you can't relax in the water then you won't be able to swim. That's because if you can't relax, you are trying to fight the water instead of learning how to move in it and use it to move yourself. -

Uh yeah. I only really ever posted on economic threads, gun threads, and maybe a few real estate threads here and there. I have a degree in economics, run an oil company, my main hobby is guns and I grew up in a real estate family. Not really sure how that makes me a "know it all"DeyDurkie5 wrote:

Gblockwell basically the kid in the story fell off a peir into like 12 feet of water and sank, wasnt able to swim at all probly mostly to fear. now his mother is starting a foundation to get cheap swimming lessons(10 bucks for 4 1/2 hr lessons) for people who cant swim.
The boys mother cant swim as well, as most people in their family and they were making the point that it was culturally passed down for years a fear of water in many black families in the south. Very sad story. -
