We just had to put my dog down.

  • redfalcon
Talk about Christmas downer. We get home from my grandmother's house last night to find that she has vomited about half a dozen times. We think maybe she just ate to much and we wait. This morning, no better. The vet confirmed our worst fears. She had a tumor in her lower spinal cord which was causing her hip problems, and it had gotten large enough that it was pushing on her stomach so hard that she couldn't keep food down.

I still remember the day we brought her home. A farmer had lost a load of hay, so my dad threw some in his truck to help out the farmer. He had a dog who had just had pups, we had a dog that had just disappeared, and the pups were just old enough to leave their mother.

If anyone ever saw the movie Marley and ME, this dog looked just like that dog.

Her name was Cheyenne, and she was 13 years old. Good life for a dog, but still sad for me and the fam.

    It's tough.

We had to put down my golden last year after his legs starting giving out. I had him since 4th grade all the way until my JR year in college.

Wait a little bit and go out to get another one. My parents will be getting one this spring.

My wife and I just put down our Shepard about 2 weeks ago. We had him for 12 yrs so I know what you are feeling. Our dog also had cancer, but it was in his lymph nodes. Could not see him suffer so we had him put to sleep

We just went threw almost the same thing. Our black lab that I lived with almost my whole life was put down in September. She only wanted to be around me. I feel all of your pain.

I feel for you my friend, after 5 years I just got a new pup in august. It was the hardest thing Ive ever done in my life to put down what was my BEST friend.
Sometimes when I look at this pup I can see the other in his eyes, it brings a little comfort (2completely different kinds of dogs). You'll know when your "ready" for another friend. Untill then just know you did the right thing for her.

Sorry to hear that. My dog was sick about a month ago and I was feeling that this might be 'it'. She is 11. She pulled through with some pills, but I know that day is comming.

So sorry for your lost, treasure your memories of your beloved dog. It took us over three years to get another dog after we had to put our last dog down.

    You mean this guy?

We've put down 3 dogs in the last 12 years. The last one was just as hard on me as the first one. Just remember you did them a favor by taking away their pain and suffering.

We have 5 dogs now from 18 months to approx. 13 years. Their friendship is worth the pain...

    Sorry Red :(

Sorry dude! I know how you feel... I had to put my fav dog down two years ago and a year later his mate died. Experienced the same multiple vomiting scenario too. Woke up in the morning and she was dead cold on the floor as if she fell asleep to her death.

    Sorry about your loss, redfalcon.

    As for "sleeper"..................................................yeah................

Sorry to hear, thanks for sharing though, just know you did the right thing and you cared for the dog the right way all through its life, which unfortunately a lot of people don't do.

RF, Sorry to hear that. I lost 3 in the last year and a half. One to old age (Heart Problem), one to lymphoma and another to an accident. I've got a 1 year old now. Life isn't complete without man's best friend.

RedFalcon- Sorry to hear about the loss of your good friend. Soon I'll be in your same place knowing our boxer, who has been in the family since a pup, is pushing 13 years old. I'm dreading the day we say goodbye.

You're welcome bro. I had a puppy just like that. She died at the age of one back in 2007 from liver disease. Then Madison was put down on September trird at the age of nine. I know exactly how it feels. It's so hard. Thank God we have two three year old labs that are full-blooded sisters. Plus two cats, so I'm very thankful for them.

redfalcon, that stinks. My best friend has been dead for many years and I still think of her. You will always have your memories even if you get another best friend!
