I was humbled today...
-
ytownfootballToday while grocery shopping, I managed to be in line behind a young girl with minimal puchases. A couple gallons of milk, two boxes of cereal, a couple dozen jars of baby food, eggs, a loaf of bread, a bag of apples and 4 or 5 shitake mushrooms.
She proceeds to remove a pack full of WIC coupons. This was undoubtedly the most laborious check-out I have ever witnessed. Each coupon had an amount and a specific purcase attatced to it apparently. A new transaction had to be initiated with each item, baby food one, cereal another etc. She was obviously distressed as the store was packed.
Her bread did not qualify as a WIC approved item. The cashier set it aside. "Do you want to go get another loaf?"--"No I just want to get out of here."
The apples and shitake's were more than the $6 she had in cash and did not qualify either, the cashier put them aside. She finalized her check-out and rushed out leaving her keys behind, the bagging fella chased her down and returned them.
25 minutes for those few purchases. Under most circumstances I would be impatient. Not today. Her obvious embarassment humbled me to my core. I don't have a lot but today I was thankful more so than usual for what I do have.
Yeah...I know...cool story bro -

september63A gentleman would have purchased the remaining items and given them to her! A baby deserves food and milk. Apples too, I guess. The mushrooms?

sleeperYeah, that's a shame. WIC is a joke though, what about the men? Why aren't feminist groups enraged that women are getting special treatment that men don't get? Or why not about the draft only selecting men? Women don't want equality, they want special privileges that the other gender has to burden. It's too bad they don't realize that women are good for only 3 things, cooking, cleaning and banging, and you can take that to the bank.

BRFYou were good for being patient. BRF has a knack for picking the wrong line to get into on those sorts of things.
However, BRF would have paid for the items that she could not afford. And I'm not cracking on you for not doing so. I do well financially, and maybe you don't............no ill will intended there.
Just try it sometime, if you have some extra dough.
I'm glad you started this thread.
Merry Christmas! -
v_falconsI thought the end of this first post would be about him paying for the girls things..

ytownfootballI did look for her in the parking lot but couldn't find her. I was absolutely going to puchase the items but felt that it would have further embarassed her though.

NP....I agree it might have furthered her embarrassment.ytownfootball wrote: I did look for her in the parking lot but couldn't find her. I was absolutely going to puchase the items but felt that it would have further embarassed her though. -

AngelI hope that she is able to turn her situation around and that it is a temporary setback for her.
I am thankful everyday for how fortunate I am and also realize that my good fortunes could change in an instant. -
wildcats20A lady I work with was telling me about a friend(I think?) of hers who is on WIC. The lady makes $40,000+ a year and is still somehow on WIC. Explain that to me somehow....

Can someone tell me how one goes on WIC?? What are the qualifications?? -
HereticAs a great guy, I'd have bought the items for her, as well.
Assuming she was hot and I felt I could parley a moment of kindness into a one-night stand. My great guy-atude only goes so far. -

It is true. More people should check it out. Seems not right, doesn't it? Yet it is there for the taking.wildcats20 wrote: A lady I work with was telling me about a friend(I think?) of hers who is on WIC. The lady makes $40,000+ a year and is still somehow on WIC. Explain that to me somehow....
And I was waiting for someone to make some kind of sexual inference on "paying for it"..........and the winner IS: Heretic, ya dog!

ZWICK 4 PREZI woulda purchased the stuff for her providing she was hot and would go on a date with me. And when I say hot and go on a date with me, I mean fuckable and would let me hit.

Hey, back when I was married, my ex made me watch that one chick flick with Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, Jeff Bridges and a bunch of other people. I remember the part where John Lithgow's character started an affair with Winger's character that was set up by a moment of kindness in a grocery store. That movie got really depressing when Winger came down with cancer and died, but Lithgow's pimp skills redeemed it all and taught me a valuable lesson!BRF wrote:

HereticJack Nicholson was hilarious in it, but I couldn't get into the whole thing about how Winger's affair was considered cool in the way it was portrayed, but Bridges' was the act of a prick.
Oh jebus....I just analyzed it.... Now let me get the sand out of my vagina. -

buckeyefallsI "think" sleeper was just being funny, but even if not, this thread is GREAT because it reminds us all to be thankful for what we have.
I know WIC has to deal with how much a family makes total and what county they live in. $40k may be a lot for most counties, but for others, it isn't. Who knows? It still seems high.
I thank God for what He has given me and my family this year! Merry Christmas to all! -

*btw, if ya help somebody out and they ask how they can repay you, you say "when you get yourself righted, YOU help somebody else out"......and that's how it goes. -

Seriouly, I have done this a few times- paid for someone's order that wasn't on WIC. If you want to be truly humbled, all you need to hear is the Thank you and see the look on the person's face when you pay.
