Apple WWDC

How come none of the fanboys made a thread on this? Apple re-hashed their Macbook line yesterday, as well as gave insight to the new iOS6.

I didn't because they always turn in to Apple bashing pissing matches.

Love the addition of the retina display to the laptop line. My wife needs an upgrade soon so we'll probably be getting one. There are also some cool new features in iOS. The Do Not Disturb and new call handling features being the best.

I bought a new MBP around 3 months ago and was very close to waiting until this announcement to buy a new version.

Glad I didn't. While the new retina display MBP is badass it only comes in 15" and starting at $2200. No thanks.

I'm interested to see how the Siri update works. I rarely use that feature, she pisses me off.

They didn't release anything of note. Meh.

I didn't see this, pretty cool. I got my last laptop back in 2009, so I'm going to start looking for a new rig later this year.

Hmm, I didn't realize the retina display was only in the 15" models. I only skimmed the laptop coverage on engadget. I was more interested in iOS.

    $2,200 is steep.

I'm on AT&T "Extended" network in my hick-town, so Siri never works, therefore, I never use it. If I had better service, I'd use Siri to text WAY more often.

It seems that investors were expecting something splashier than iOS
    6
    and the next-generation
    MacBook Pro
. Although most major stock indices were down sharply today as
markets reacted negatively to the proposed bailout of the Spanish banking
    system, it’s notable that Apple’s
stock began to fall almost immediately after the company finished up its WWDC keynote address in San Francisco
Monday. Apple’s shares, which closed at just above $580 on Friday, started the
day trading at around $587 and peaked in the $588 range around noon before
steadily dropping throughout the early afternoon. The stock then dropped quickly
after Apple wrapped up its keynote, going from $579.67 at 3:00 p.m. to $573.84
at 3:30 p.m. before closing the day at $571.17, down 1.58% from the previous
day’s close. CNBC analyst Bob Pisani, for one, said that many traders thought
that Apple’s WWDC presentation was fairly underwhelming and “a relative
    non-event.”

Look, I think everyone was expecting
a little more from iOS 6
. There are plenty of features Apple didn’t add to
the latest version of its mobile operating system. I could literally go on and
on about how there aren’t automatic app updates in the background, or how you
still can’t access Bluetooth or Wi-Fi from the Notification Center (although
Bluetooth is now on the first page of settings making it a little easier), or
how apps are still represented by static icons instead of some form of widgets.
The fact is, however, that just from using iOS 6 since it was available for
developers yesterday afternoon, the entire OS feels even more cohesive, more
thought out, and much more tighter than anything Android has delivered.

The gap has widened even further between iOS and Android, and iOS 6 truly
makes Android feel like some high school science project on acid that takes
place in TRON. Apple’s mobile OS is meticulously thought out, and almost every
small feature we’ve been asking for has been added — even ones we didn’t ask
    for.

Do Not Disturb is a life saver! My iPad on the dock doesn’t light up my
bedroom every three minutes at night anymore. Siri on the iPad is an incredibly
welcome addition, performing just as well (if not better) than the iPhone 4S. In
fact, I’d even say that iOS 6 on the iPad makes the iPad feel more useful to me,
    and more desktop-like.

Turn by turn navigation is great and the new 3D maps are stunning, though
they aren’t available in many places yet. Multiple signatures and VIP in Mail
are welcome additions, and here’s something I just noticed earlier this morning…
when you update apps from the App Store, the OS keeps you on the app page
instead of dumping you out to your home screen — finally.

Safari’s iCloud tabs are incredibly useful, built-in Facebook support works
great, and Apple has finally unified Apple IDs and phone numbers, making
iMessage that much more useful as an IM replacement.

All in all, there are more than 200 new features in iOS 6 — here are a few
you might have missed from yesterday’s keynote:
    • Decline an incoming call with a pre-written text message letting the caller
know you’ll message them in a few minutes
    • FaceTime over cellular
    • Offline reading list
    • Ability to upload photos from Safari to websites
    • Shared photo streams
    • Insert photos of videos directly into emails
    • Redesigned App Store and iTunes store
    • Lost mode for iOS devices
    • Personal dictionary syncs with iCloud
    • Game Center challenges
    • New features for China
    • Improved privacy controls with permission to use contacts
    • Custom vibration for alerts
    • Ability to use a song as an alarm
    • Faster Safari javascript
    • New sharing menu
    • Location reminders for iPad
iOS 6 doesn’t bring all of the features we want, but in using the OS, it
keeps Apple four steps ahead of Android as the leader in the mobile world. And
that’s even without a new phone.

I believe they are getting rid of the 17" model altogether b/c their sales were so low. No thanks.

Yeah the Apple fanboys are really insane.

Gotta have that iPod, iPhone, iPad, Mac Book Pro, iMac, Apple TV and upgrade them all when the next version comes out. I know at least 2 people in my life that are like this and they always complain that they have no money.

The retina display is worthless at that size. It might be nice at 24", but 15" is worthless.

I didn't see anything jump out at me at the conference. The "Do Not Disturb"/reject with text feature is a blatant copy of Android.

The Siri sports thing was neat, but I prefer to not talk to my phone.

I'm not sure what this guy is getting at, where IOS is ahead of Android. I can already decline calls with a messge, automatic app updates and turn by turn.

I have Sprint and their 3G sucks, so that could be the problem. Regardless, Siri sucks.

What was the word regarding the Airs? I didn't look into it. Bigger SSD?

I almost went with a 13" Air, but didn't because of storage. 128g was too small.

I believe they got thinner, more expensive.

    Edit: Nope, cheaper:

I thought the Airs were coming down in price, since they are replacing the MacBooks?

I like the new features with i0S6, but how about being able to customly make text tones? Also will siri be available for the iPhone 4?

Retina display is awesome on my ipad. Which is much smaller than 15".

So be it...but the fact that it's on such a small screen does nothing for anyone who isn't looking at high-res pictures.

Just read a review that gaming on it is next to impossible.

I'd venture to guess those springing for it are more likely to work in the creative industry and not much into gaming.

But I am curious what makes it impossible to game on?

Higher the resolution, the more stress on the video card. Apple doesn't use awesome video cards in their stuff, so performance at high resolutions in 3d applications will suffer.

Will I be able to set my alarm with only "vibrate" mode? Yes, I know I can download a third party app and record my own alarm, but I like the simple vibrate only feature. iOS 5 makes you select a ringer or ringtone. Pisses me off.

Also...I'd much like custom notifications (ala Android devices). Some of the apps have it, some don't. I don't know if it's an iOS or developer issue, but I'd like to be able to pick and choose which apps I want an audible/vibrating alert and which apps I want to be silent. Actually, I prefer all my apps have silent alerts (except text and phone of course), so that I'm not constantly looking at my phone because it's beeping or ringing or whatever.

EDIT...I suppose I may have answered my own question with this new "Do Not Disturb" feature.
