Dad removes son from game for having poor grades

What would you do if you told your son his grades were not good enough to play sports and he played anyway? I'm fine with a parent removing his own child from a game when he was told he should not play.

I'd shoot him in the face

+1 for his intentions, but negs for his execution. At that point, I would have waited after the game for the kid to get his.

Embarrass him in front of the other kids. Even more effective. It'll make him work on his grades, and think twice before he disobeys dad again.

Seems like more of a look at me for being a good dad moment rather than a teaching the kid that grades are more important than sports.

It probably would have been smarter to either wait, or go to the coach and have him remove him. But I have had my daughter go somewhere before after I told her not to and I went directly there and removed her from the situation and drove her home. (She is 14, so that might be a little different. It also was a group of friends and not a public sporting event.)

True, but it obviously didn't work in that fashion for him lol.

Going to the coach would have been smarter.

I need a lot more info on this. It appears that the boy is a pawn in a divorce battle. I want to know What his grades were, when dad found out, and what conversation that he had with the boy.

Running out on the field was a poorly executed play on the dad's behalf.

But then again, It all sucks just because it involves soccer.

    Go to the coach first???

I'm tired of this takes a village ideology crap. Its his son, and his son apparently disobeyed him. Its not like he went out and beat his ass. Society is fucked.

    Who's at fault ?

The dad for not taking a interest in the kids grade before it got out of control ... or ...
the kid who let his grade slip and didn't do the work ?

Two wrongs is still wrong .... father and the kids needs to come together and work in supporting each other so this does happen again.

So if it was a basketball game, you would run onto the court and grab him while the game was going on?

When I was coaching JV football, I had an irate parent in the stands who was pissed that his son was playing. He wasn't pissed at the coaches, but pissed at his son. The dad was drunk, the head coach tried to calm him down, and he ended up peeling out of the parking lot.

As a parent, this would have been my course of action, and the penalty would increase substantially due to his blatant disobedience...a lesson would definitely be taught here, without having to humiliate him.

It would not surprise me if there were important details missing from the story.

Stupid parent...Clearly athletic scholarship is this kid's only chance.
  • Fab1b
As a sports official myself, there is nothing worse that someone coming out into the field of play. You have no clue what their intentions are, if they are coming after you, an athlete, etc......After the dust settles here I agree this kid is a pawn in a divorce however this dad was dead wrong for his actions and this situation could have really gotten out of control fast. I wouldn't hesitate to protect myself or an athlete if I felt there was any threat approaching!

ive seen this happen before...you only need a 2.0 to play in our district which is barely above a d average. in some places you can play with a 1.7. just because you are "eligible" doesnt mean both parents agree that you should play. one situation involved a foster mom saying no way and the parents who didnt have custody at the time fighting for him to play. kid had a 2.1.

When I was in school, my punishment for bad grades was not being able to play any sports. It never came to that, but I'm sure that if I went against my parents' wishes and played w/o them knowing, they wouldn't embarrass me in front of everyone. They would have waited until the end of the game and scolded me big time.

Maybe another idea would be to tell the coach (and I'm VERY against parents EVER intervening w/ the coach) that the kid did not meet the parents' grade standards and they told him he was not to play, and hope the coach goes along. Haha.

    A couple of random thoughts:

Whether we lived apart or together, Mom and I would be on the same page in terms of these kinds of decisions before either of us acted.

I would not use the coach to do our dirty work. I would, however, inform the coach that the little dullard will not be playing until his academics are back in order.

What it came to be with my situation with the parent was... It got to the point that we were so annoyed with dad. Every week, it seemed to be something different. The kid was playing, he wasn't playing, etc. We finally just said, "listen, your son is eligible by school standards. We're not going to keep going back and forth. You either want your son to be on this team, or you don't." Dad took him off the team.

this was tough for me at times as a coach when it involved the best player. sitting him also punished the rest of the team because now we cant win. often it wasnt just grades sometimes parents would call me the day of the game and say rico didnt clean his room so he wont be playing today. i always tried to work out some alternative punishment involving lots of running and pushups in lue of missing the game. other times i eventually had to cut the kid because i cant keep wondering if your going to be able to play or not no matter how good you are. its not fair to the team at some point that way either
