Godfather vs Citizen Kane
-
bigdaddy2003Well I watched Citizen Kane for the first time today and I must say I'm not sure who the people are that think it's as good as The Godfather but I'm not one of those people. Does anyone on here think it's better?

Godfather easily. No contest.bigdaddy2003;1179066 wrote:Well I watched Citizen Kane for the first time today and I must say I'm not sure who the people are that think it's as good as The Godfather but I'm not one of those people. Does anyone on here think it's better?
People consider CK to be a great movie, because some of the things they did (camera angles, panning, editing, etc) were ground breaking at the time. No way CK's acting or plot compares to godfather imo. -

right, Godfather is more entertaining, Citizen Kane is more historically significant.like_that;1179072 wrote:Godfather easily. No contest.

I'm impressed at this post. And I second what you and like that have said. -
Mooney44CardsGodfather has the superior plot/acting by far.
But Citizen Kane should not be dismissed. It was written, directed, and starred in by the same guy. The aging makeup was WAYYYY ahead of its time, the cinematography was unparalleled, and the narrative structure set the standard for the next 80+ years. When you consider how well Citizen Kane holds up compared to many other movies of the same period, it really is one of the most impressive films ever made.
But honestly if you're just going on pure plot/acting/directing value, I think the Godfather is superior. -
hoops23Fair points being made and no denying CK was revolutionary for it's time. But as a whole, The Godfather is the GOAT. IMO of course.

SonofanumpI hate Godfather #31 and Citizen Cane #42 on my list. Both great films.

isadoreit is also really slick in citizen kane, how they use the March of Time to present kane at the beginning of the film

OSHCitizen Kane sucked, in my opinion. I had to watch it for class in August. I was excited to finally watch it after hearing so much about it.
-
Commander of AwesomeLittle off topic but I always felt the OG King Kong was always over looked in the best/most impressive film debates. If CK is being considered for what it meant to cinema than King Kong needs to be right up there.

Just curious.....what "sucked" about it? Did it not live up to expectations or was it completely not an enjoyable movie in any way shape or form?OSH;1179321 wrote:Citizen Kane sucked, in my opinion. 2kool4skoolLike others have said, Citizen Kane is undeniably one the most significant film of all-time, which is why you often see it rated as "best" when they want to be fair to all time periods. It really is incredible how well it holds up compared to other films from the era.
The Godfather is obviously the more entertaining/compelling film overall. Though in my opinion, Godfather II is actually even better. -
Classyposter58The Godfather completely changed the way crime movies were thought of and showed how the mafia was kind of a reaction to a corrupt society. Perfect star cast, one of the best directors of all-time and a perfect story make this probably the best ever. I think Apocolaypse Now, Lord of the Rings, Goodfellas and One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest are the only IMO to compare

I've always thought the Vito (Robert DeNiro) story was wayyyyy more interesting than the Michael Corleone story in Godfather II. It is an exceptional film, but I'm not sure that OVERALL it is better than the Godfather which is much more interesting overall because it is one complete narrative.2kool4skool;1179353 wrote:Like others have said, Citizen Kane is undeniably one the most significant film of all-time, which is why you often see it rated as "best" when they want to be fair to all time periods. Agreed. I actually think, all things considered, DeNiro's performance in Godfather II is the best acting performance of all-time. You could remove the subtitles and still understand exactly what he's saying by his facial expressions and body language.Mooney44Cards;1179355 wrote:I've always thought the Vito (Robert DeNiro) story was wayyyyy more interesting than the Michael Corleone story in Godfather II. -
