Game over, glory days gone

  • Belly35
When is it time to call the game over for yourself? Over the past two years I have suffered damage foot, serious hamstring injury, shoulder strain and now a knee (knee cap dislocated).. Sport injury is nothing new to an athlete however lengthy recovery time is. Preventing me from enjoying sporting activities tough run, softball, tennis, pistol competition and the occasional deer hunting w/ tomahawk. I still push myself but it hard to face reality I’m getting old. I just realized I can’t touch the basketball rim any more. That is a sad fact.
As former athletes we all come to the reality that our glory days end. This happens early in high school with an injury, after graduation and or after college regulating once was high energy performers to recreational sports programs, church leagues and less contact sport (golf, tennis, bocce and bowling). However we channel our abilities and continue to seek those moments of glory.

When did you come to the reality that your glory days are over as an athlete?

I knew after my military injury that what once was will no longer be ..

What do you do now as a sport activity? </SPAN>
It would be easy to tell want I don't do any more
I no longer play in a league for softball or basketball dropped that three years ago, some golf and tennis, workout to compete in the tough run and still train for pistol competition. </SPAN>

Fortunately distance running is one sport where you can still have glory days later in life.

Maybe not going for overall wins and times as much but can compete against people the same age and ability.

Age 32, was varsity assistant boys bball coach where I work. Was practicing against them, went up for a rebound and when I came down I could see the kids foot I was heading towards but my brain couldnt get my foot to move fast enough. I was laid up for 3 weeks with a bum ankle.

I still lift light weights and jog, but have not played a hard competitive sport since that time! lol

I can still play a mean game of wiffle ball. ;)

Still powerlift, run sprints & do Prowler push sprints at 44. Stopped competing in anything that resembled a sport in my late 20's. Retired from pro wrestling at 34.

    1) After college, b/c who gives a fuck?

    2) Golf terribly and drink beer. I do, however, referee basketball. That's my new hobby/passion/activity

My bucket list is to hunt a deer and kill it with a tomahawk .... A goal I have. I'm good with throwing a tomahawk could be better. But this would have to be a perfect throw, close distance and surprise attack. Do I expect to accomplish this so-so but I would like to try..

I have recently given up pick-up basketball. Took a finger to the eye which scratched the cornea, not fun. Always have been careful not to twist an ankle, and never played during football season. Gave up flag football at 28, softball at 35. Now I just officiate football, golf, run, bike, swim, lift.</SPAN>

Also, not lovers with snot and ETB.

More impressive would be to kill a deer with a Swiss Army knife. Climb up a tree and wait for Bambi to walk under you. Abush with a body slam and wrastle the furry little fucker to the ground while you cuss in it's ear. Then proceed to evicerate it with scissors, pliers and the screw driver. Finish with a slit to the throat with the knife, followed by a neck twisting neck break.

That my friend is a goal to be proud of....

Basketball - probably 32 or 33, in competitive work-related leagues it was that point where I was a liability on the team. Couldn't jump as high, couldn't move as quick, couldn't maintain my dribble.

    I still run.

This morning it was only 12.

Since I'm 22, I'm not looking forward to that day. I had a pretty serious neck injury in football when I was 17, that hampers a lot of what I can do 100% to this day.

The thread is about "when did you realize your glory days were over"; not "what makes you a psycho"
