Time Magazine names Ben Bernanke "man of the year"?

  • visionquest
Is this a joke? Seriously, this guy helped create the situation we are in economically. Does the print media wonder why they are going bankrupt? First it was Obama's nobel peace prize and now this? I realize that this means little to most, but, being named "man of the year" by Time used to be a pretty big deal. They've lost their scruples I think. Print is dead as dead.

i don't think you understand why they named him man of the year

    What Derek said.

I understand perfectly well why they named him man of the year. He "made" the news and all that blah-blah, just always thought the distinction was for a different purpose. They do not deride him in the article, as they should, they put him on a pedestal that I think, along with many others he should not be placed on.

him "making" the news? try again...the dude has the power to make a trillion dollars just appear if he wanted to, and the Fed isn't audited...some would argue he's more powerful than the POTUS.

    V-Quest,

I agree with you. There are many, many, many people in America that have actually done good and astounding things for this country.

    Bernanke isn't one of them.

TIME has lost their friggen minds and their standards. Oh, I feel the urge to go on a tangent, but I won't and will shut up now. :)

doing good isn't the criteria for man of the year
  • cbus4life
You guys don't understand the award.

Yes, it has been given to great people who have done a ton of good, but that isn't part of the criteria.

Hitler and Stalin were given this in 1938 and 39, respectively. I even think Stalin received it another year.

You've got plenty of chances to complain about media bias, but this is not one of them.

    *Yawn*

    Umkay!

    Cbus, need some coffee?
  • cbus4life
    YES!

Remember on 2001 Time was going to name Bin Laden man of the year but due to backlash they didn't.
  • cbus4life
Which is funny because, like i said, it would have totally made sense.

It isn't about, necessarily, who has done the most "good," but who has had the greatest impact on the world as a whole, in their estimation. Hence Hitler and Stalin being named.
  • Fab1b
    That is correct
  • cbus4life
But, i feel like they should rename the award to make it more clear. :D

On another note AP voted Tiger as athlete of the decade.

    "You guys don't understand opinion"

    :)

You all missed the reason. Plain and simple it is who will make the most money and sales for Time! They are a tabloid with a glossy cover just selling off the headline that will give them the highest distro for the current edition. It is that simple.

Yes. I was actually thinking they'd name Madoff, but then realized his impact, though large, was definitely not as influential as Bernanke's. Whether good or bad, the man of the year had to have been someone who plays a large role in the economy and Bernanke makes sense.

    A couple of quick thoughts:

*as has already been pointed out, "Man of the Year" is more a distinction of being newsworthy, not a reflection of anything else. Helicopter Ben is one of the most influential/newsworthy people of the year, so this makes a lot of sense.

*I'm not sure I understand the anger toward him. Bernanke has done some incredible work in shoring up the nation's financial system and saving us from a Great Depression. I don't think most people realize how tight the credit markets were and how close we were to going over the edge. He certainly has made mistakes, but most serious economists/policy people point to him as one of the few bright spots of the Bush/Obama administrations.

That makes even less sense. That may work for Teen Magazine. Twilight kiddy followers don't read Time! They know their market. This was for the money!

LOL, you'll blindly defend anyone who falls in your party. You're clueless.

This has got to be a fucking joke--as big a joke as Obama winning the Nobel. Bernanke?! LMFAO!
