Arizona baseball team forfeits State Title because they refuse to play against a girl

Apparently the school is part of a strict sect of Catholics that believe in the separation of the sexes. The teams played twice in the regular season, and the girl sat out, so her team could play. She decided she wasn't going to do it in the State Title.
On a more serious note, Mesa (the school with the girl on the team) not only has a female AD, SHE'S ALSO THE FOOTBALL COACH!
So, which story is bigger here? the baseball game or the football head lady coach? -

Raw Dawgin' itwhy would they have "Lady" in their school name?

Fly4FunI can maybe understand forfeiting if it's a "contact" sport such as football or wrestling. Some people just believe you shouldn't be that physically aggressive towards women (whether it be because of religious beliefs or non-religious beliefs). But refusing to play against a girl in baseball is just weak.

Either is stupid really. Wrestling I still think would be stupid, especially at the state level, to not compete but I can get how some would be uneasy with it but either of the other sports makes no sense to me.Fly4Fun;1167901 wrote:I can maybe understand forfeiting if it's a "contact" sport such as football or wrestling. People need to get rid of that silly line of thinking whether it's from religion or otherwise. Nothing fucking wrong with playing baseball against a girl, anyone who thinks there's something wrong with that has to be insane. -

justincredibleCongrats to the head of the forfeiting school for robbing a bunch of kids (from both teams) the experience of playing in a state championship. Ridiculous.

I agree that there is nothing wrong with playing baseball against a girl, or basketball, tennis, soccer, etc. But it's strongly ingrained in most males that you don't hit girls. Part of that is because it used to be among males to police ourselves because women couldn't really speak up for themselves because of the social status difference between men and women that has existed throughout much of history. But part of it is also because men are generally bigger than women, and it's generally frowned upon to hit people smaller than yourself ("Pick on someone your own size").I Wear Pants;1167913 wrote:Either is stupid really. But I know I would be very uncomfortable if I were to have to wrestle a girl or tackle a girl in the course of the game. For example I swam in high school and college. But often coaches will have a water polo practice as a change of pace very few months for a fun practice. For those that don't know, Water Polo is actually a pretty physical game. There is a lot of pulling, tugging and kicking that goes on under the water that's unseen (some of it for positioning, some of it accidental, and some of it just to gain a physical upperhand and assert yourself). Whenever I was manned up against a guy, that of course went on, but when it was a girl, none, I would just play nice and hold my own space, but nothing intentional, the occasional hit when swimming happens, but that's expected.
I don't think there is anything inherently stupid with the idea that in general men should not hit women. -

My sentiments exactly."I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century." -
said_aouitaAll the stupid religious people who believe in separation is the story.

State should disqualify them from future playoff participation and have let the team they defeated in the semifinal round to play in their place.justincredible;1167973 wrote:Congrats to the head of the forfeiting school for robbing a bunch of kids (from both teams) the experience of playing in a state championship. The idea should be that people should not hit people regardless of gender.Fly4Fun;1167983 wrote:I agree that there is nothing wrong with playing baseball against a girl, or basketball, tennis, soccer, etc. But it's strongly ingrained in most males that you don't hit girls. Sport is an entirely different thing and for example if some pushing and such is part of the game of water polo (that is a really rough and physically demanding sport) I don't see why that couldn't be played with females.
I do get the "pick on someone your own size thing" but that's not really a problem in most sports like baseball and in sports like wrestling or BJJ/grappling there are weight classes to prevent that being a problem.
But yes, there isn't anything particularly stupid about men not wanting to hit women but they really shouldn't want to hit anyone. -
DeadliestWarrior34I'd lose it if I was on the forfeiting team.

Manhattan BuckeyeI think the term "state title" is used fairly loosely in this situation given it is a charter league. I think the team shouldn't care that there is a girl playing against them, but it is hardly national news. For years the local charter school wouldn't schedule publics in basketball because the publics' cheerleaders wore skirts that were too short - of course a more important reason was they'd get killed...at any rate not national news either.
