Chock one up for us old guys-Jamie Moyer makes history tonight....
-
DthaneThe soft throwing LH pitcher becomes the oldest pitcher (49 y/o, +150 days) to win a MLB game since recorded history. He was winning 5-2 in the ninth before the closer gave up a home run and got two more guys on with singles, before getting the next batter out with the pitch that Moyer would be proud of: the changeup.
He is a great family guy that runs a charity. He has pitch for at least the Cubs, Phillies, Mariners, and Rockies. Don't look now, he may look to extend his record next Sunday or Monday. If it's Monday, he may have a chance to pitch against the Pirates. If he has to pitch against the Pirates, I am sure he already shaking in his boots. LOL -

wes_mantoothThe guy has shown for a lot of years that you don't have to throw 95 mph as long as you can locate with several pitches.

said_aouitaIt's baseball, not like you have to be a real athlete for fans to consider you good.

It's the same as a kicker in football being mentioned for the oldest to kick a field goal.Rotinaj;1146730 wrote:lol, another one of these comments. Awesomeeee.
Oldest human to parachute.
Oldest to wutever......
I don't understand what age has to do with it. -

Do you have any idea the toll pitching takes on the arm?said_aouita;1146759 wrote:It's the same as a kicker in football being mentioned for the oldest to kick a field goal.

SportsAndLadyDid he just compare being a Major League Baseball (starting) pitcher to fucking parachuting?!
-
justincredible
A 49 year old guy getting a win against a bunch of 20-30 year olds is impressive. Not comparable to parachuting or kicking a field goal. It doesn't take an athlete to run through the woods, either.said_aouita;1146706 wrote:It's baseball, not like you have to be a real athlete for fans to consider you good.

gerb131Reminds me of Harris in the Major League movies.
Good for him none the less. -

Crisco? Bardol? Vagisil. Any one of them will give you another two to three inches drop on your curve ball. Of course if the umps are watching me real close I'll rub a little jalapeño up my nose, get it running, and if I need to load the ball up I just... wipe my nosegerb131;1146782 wrote:Reminds me of Harris in the Major League movies.

DthaneSorry, it is chalk, I must have been thinking of those little vitamins my brother overdosed on when he we 3 or 4. I have watched alot of baseball in the last 40 years. My wife would say too much, from little to major leagues. Not every kid has the 100mph heater, but almost every kid I have ever put on the mound (none at all with the 100mph heater) could learn a little about pitching from watching Moyer. Not everyone needs to pitch like him. And how many 49 year olds can still hum it even if at just 80mph (I am lucky to hit 60-65mph and have to stand 40 ft from the batters just to give them a Pony look). But to be able to pitch in, out, change speeds, spot the ball and tease or miss just off the plate is pretty impressive to me.
From what I understand, Moyer and his family have some kind of charity which also says alot about the guy. Good for him. Just as long as the Pirates beat him next Monday or at least win the game. Then he can break his record again. -
thavoiceDoubt anyone ever surpasses his mark. Guys will either be run outta the league well before that age, or simply not care to pitch anymore because even at the low end of the salary structure they SHOULD have a ton of money saved up.

DthaneMoyer vs. Brad Lincoln in Pittsburgh Monday night, snow permitting.

SBulldog93 does and Satchel Paige pitching 3 innings in MLB at age 58 is more impressive to me.ernest_t_bass;1146770 wrote:Do you have any idea the toll pitching takes on the arm? -
QuakerOatsHis top speed the other night was 79 mph --- and he still dazzled them; incredible. This reminds me of the the movie 'The Rookie' ....one of the all-time greats.

DthaneI guess they have changed it to Correia and Moyer. Not that that makes that much of a difference.
-
Ironman92His first win came against the Phillies.....the "L" in that game? Steve Carlton

sportswizuhrdIn his first pro win in June of '86, Steve Carlton of the Phillies was the losing the pitcher. Wow.
-
Ironman92Did you get that from my post? Lol
-
2kool4skoolIn Moyer's first win, the opposing pitcher was Steve Carlton
-
Laley23Well, I guess it was Steve Carlton. But if I had to guess without the answer, I mightve said Babe Ruth.

So three innings as a 58 year old versus being on the starting rotation as a 49 year old and possibly keep playing?
