Would a true Democracy ever work?

  • sleeper
I feel like with advancing technology a true Democracy would actually be pretty cool to implement. Imagine if the American budget was decided on by all the people going to the polls(or via computer), or the decision to ban gay marriage, or whether or not Marijuana should be legal.

Now, you'd have to pass a test to vote in this Democracy because we wouldn't want the ENTIRE Democratic party voting or the redneck GOPers from the South having a say in anything. Otherwise we could end up with Obama, or even worse Rick Santorum.

    Anyway, thoughts?

To be honest with ya....too many people as it is dont understand even some of the simplist issues that are put up to vote and you want them to now someone how a direct vote on the budget? Some of those things like the budget would be a clusterfuck as a vote.

The other things...yeah. Those can be voted upon and probably would work

Never. The unintelligent masses would not let those who could run an efficient country do so. So we have the pathetic mess that we are in now.

    You can't fix stupid.

Nope. I'm pretty sure some researchers just looked into this question and came to a pretty bleak conclusion. Humanity is dumb.

Yep. It'd turn into all the stupid people running things while all the smart people act stupid by constantly arguing over what way to go. Which...come to think about it...isn't really any different than how things have been over the past decade or three anyway, so whatever...

    Americans are retarded, so no.

Even the most intelligent people simply don't have the time to fully study all the issues and then to make intelligent decisions regarding them. That's why a representative democracy is superior.

Would you really want members of the OC deciding if it is illegal to have sex with an unwilling person?
  • GoPens
People are too fucking lazy to vote in a representative democracy let alone a pure democracy.

Although I do endorse true democracy in this...AYE.

They used to have one... but like marriage, you are not allowed to voice your opinion unless you are agreeing with the moderator.

It wouldn't work for one reason:

A portion of the electorate (i.e., all) would decide to take away the rights of a certain group via some threshold: intelligence, wealth, etc. Then, a smaller group of that subset would vote to restrict the right to vote to a smaller percentage. And smaller, and smaller. The system would eventually breakdown when either the minority rose up in revolt, or a small group controlled absolutely everything by constantly justifying their need to restrict the right to vote to a smaller and smaller group.

No, there should be a "war tax" to encourage awareness and involvement in foreign policy issues though.

I think most people missed the part where I said in this scenario you would have to pass a test to vote. The test would be akin to getting a 36 on your ACT in order to vote.

    Problems solved.

I agree with Sleeper. We'd be debt free in a year, and have Canada and Mexico as part of our empire by year 3.
