Home Media Server (WD Live, PS3, etc)

  • McFly1955
We have basic HD cable for like $14 a month, coupled with Netflix subscription, and we have playon, which lets us play hulu on TV easily. We have Roku, PS3, 360....Roku on the family room, game systems in the basement theater...

I see people one other sites like slickdeals talking about these media server devices (there was a deal for WD live player today, which brings me to posting this thread), but I don't fully understand what they do.

Am I missing something? It this something I could use my PS3 media server for?

I'm good with tech stuff, but I just don't understand what I'm missing...

Are people using this to somehow watch new release movies at home while they are still in theater, or dowloading new TV episodes that aren't available on hulu/netflix and streaming them from their PC or something?

I get that it allows you to stream files from your PC to your TV, but I personally have zero movies/TV shows on my PC....Do people download illegal movie files to a harddrive then stream?

Anyone have a setup like this?

    Yes.

I have the wd live, but I only use it to play movies from an external hard drive. It reads a lot of different file types which is nice.

How do said movie files get to your external hard drive...How is the quality/sound?

I use torrents from demonoid. The quality is top notch because I usually download .mkv files which are bluray rips.

also, that deal for the refurb on slickdeals is legit...50 bucks is a very nice deal for a media player.

well, I am sure there will be other deals, one thing though....it is wifi ready, you still would have to buy a wifi adapter if you wanted to stream to it. I don't use this function since I have apps like netflix and hulu plus built into my tv.

It is a neat little toy though...I convinced GoChiefs to buy one. And if you get one, let me know...I am always willing to help on getting people set up for torrents.(not that it is complicated)

What is the legality of torrent sites nowadays...I used to...obtain....games that way several years ago, but haven't messed with it for a long time. Are there methods to protect yourself?

How long does it take you to download a normal length movie .mkv?

If I do get something like this I'll def take you up on that and send you a message..

Lol...legality is iffy at best. I use peer block when downloading and I have never had an issue. A lot of the .mkv files are around 2gb, so it can take a little while. If it is seeded decent...I can get them in about 40 mins. MP4 files also look good and are much smaller, so they can be had in 15 mins or so. That all depends on your internet though.

Love my media player as well. Take tooth's advice on this one, but pay no attention to his movie suggestions.
