What era would you like your tour of duty to be?

  • Belly35
I have listen to this discussion many times in bars, lunch room and the local coffee shop with some of the old timers, listening with great intent. Never really having an opinion because the potential for bias so I keep to myself. I feeling that each era of American Combat Soldier has earned and should be honored what is rightfully theirs at time in history as an American Fighting Soldier no better or worse given the situation, equipment and enemy.

What era of American soldiers was the best fighting force?

I’m sure some will separate the different branches and within those branches different special units as a comparison.

That’s not the question of the topic, in general ….What era of American Combat Troops in your opinion was the best fighting force? Why?

Second question: What era of American Combat Soldier would you have liked to have serve in, if you could, just to experence the moment in historical time?

I think the modern era would be the best cause honestly weve learned a lot from our forefathers. WWI andII soldiers were incredible just knowing how many people signed up to fight. My father served in vietnam and they did a pretty good job for what hand they were dealt. i tried to join them all when i was younger but had a tore acl and they wouldnt take me.

WWII, in an easy decision for me. I would have loved (in a different sense of the word) to fight in either the Pacific or Europe.

If I have to choose, give me modern era. They have the highest survival rate.

For me, I'd want to be a cowboy back in the day when they had guns and fought the Indians, who were armed with bows and arrows...just sayin'

I would choose the american revolution or earlier like the 1066 invasion of england. Just cause I want to know what the world was like back then. If I picked between the post revolution wars, I would have liked to be in Patton's Army in WWII.

    Great question.

Part of me says I would like to have been in WWII with the invasion of Europe. That seems to be the biggest and most "historic"

I think that in the Civil War we have the most brave soldiers. To stand there in a formation and fire upon one another. With men laying all around dead, or even worse, suffering like crazy. The jagged edges of rounds and really nothing to do to help the guy would be impossible to go through.
The charges and bayonet and hand-to-hand combat would be intense.

The more technology we have, the less "personal" it becomes it seems. Dropping bombs from 30k feet, and from drones, and ships miles and miles away.

I wont pretend to know what it is like, but I would like to experience going to war once. It may sound stupid...but that is how I feel

Today's soldiers are obviosly safer and we use the best tactics we ever have and tomarrow we will develope better soldiers and tactics . . the revolutionary war soldiers or volunteers were fighting for the freedom of our country so they have a certain thing about them that nobody can be. In WWI Our soldiers were paraded off with celebrations and they had no idea what a nightmare they were about to face . The Soldiers marching off in the begining of the Civil war were paraded off in the same fashion and were slaughtered at Antietem where the southern soldiers who were fighting with similar zeal as the revolutionary soldiers did routed the notherners . Our Army was a pretty poor force for the most part during the war of 1812 ,but we got the job done . The Korean war or otherwise known as the "forgotton war " was at the begining fought will ill equiped and untrained troops until we got a grasp of the situation . Vietnam was a disaster but many men fought will the tenacity and zeal . We had many good units ,but it was just a lack of good leadership and good plan to win . We fought with one hand tied behind our back in a war that probably shouldnt have been fouhgt in the first place . WWII Was the war of all wars . Men went off to defend our country willing to die and many many did . They ran into bullets at Iwo Jimo and places like that the same way they did in the revolutionary war days . Our heart was in the right place and our countries will to win was in its right place . If I had to go into battle today . Id like to have the technologies of today's fighting force , the zeal of the revolutionary war soldier ,and the heart of the soldier in WWII.

I mean, if we are talking survival rate thats different. But I think WW2 would be the best fighting and most action, etc.

If this is a question on which era of troops is the best force...there is no doubt it's the modern era. For starters, we're bigger, faster and stronger as a race. As aforementioned, we've learned from our mistakes and have improved strategies when it comes to warfare. We're also better trained currently.

Our current troops would annihilate our past troops.

You could put 10,000 civil war heroes out in the middle of a field, place 100 army snipers a mile away in a tower and the snipers would have the civil war vets picked off before they got to the towers.

based on your comments in another thread it sounds like you'd go back and join the S.S.

If we're limited to combat action, I'd prefer WWII. Clear purpose and objective and we were clearly on right side.

Having listened to first-hand accounts of nighttime search and destroy missions in Vietnam, I can only imagine what it was like going through that kind of hell for what we all realized was political positioning. :( I still don't understand how those guys kept from crapping their shorts ten times a night.

I would choose the Civil War or WWII.
  • dwccrew
Served a tour in Iraq in 2007. Was a supporter of the war until I went over there, but that is an entirely different thread.

I would agree with what CFF said about WW2. It was clear we were on the right side and it was a common and clear mission. It was also the last declared war in US history and look how we kicked ass. Maybe our congressmen and women need to take a long hard look at history.

I feel bad for those who served in the Vietnam era. Sent off to a war for political reasons and not appreciated (and often verbally abused) when they came home when many were sent off without really volunteering.

    Bosnia. Easy money.

American soldiers nowadays have the greatest advantage over it's enemy. Taking other things into consideration, I look at Vietnam vets as the best.
