When do you finally seek medical attention.

  • Big_Mirg_ZHS
Been sick a couple days and contemplating going to the dr. My question is with all the bad asses out there. How long until you give in and seek medical attention.

I haven't been to the doctor since my senior year of high school. Unless you count my trip to the hospital the night of my bachelor party. I don't really remember it so I don't count it.

I used to be a person who would never go to the doctor When I turned 60 my doctor retired from private practice and took a job as a military physician. I had to find a new doctor and my wife's doctor, a person I had been acquainted with for years casually through following his sons and their athletic exploits, graciously agreed to add me to his practice. At my very first appointment he asked me how long I wanted to live. I thought that was kind of a silly question but I bit and said "as long as you can keep me that way, doctor". So, he scheduled a complete work-up for me with everything checked. Well, it turns out that I had cancer. It is going on six years and if it hadn't been for having my doctor order those tests, I may not be here right now. Because they caught it very early, I have been successfully treated and as of 6 months ago, my doctor thinks that everything is fine. If I even look at my wife funny now, I schedule an appointment. I have turned into the most pro-active patient in history. It is far better to be safe than sorry. :)

I haven't been to see a doctor in over 10 years. I have been sick probably two or three times when most people would have sought medical attention.

Congrats to you!! I ended up in the ER due to a work accident yrs ago. The ER Dr. fixed me up but also suggested I follow up something he spotted on the X-Ray. Turned out to be cancer and 2 months later I had the kidney removed. If I hadnt had the work accident, I'd never known about a cancerous spot on my kidney.

I have to be sick or have something wrong with me for probably 2+ weeks before I go to the doctors.

I'd have to be pretty sick to the point where I can't leave my bed. I do try to go to the doctor to get a physical/blood drawn every 12-18 months just to make sure everything is good. Never know what might be going on in your body (i.e. fox's story).

I think the third and fourth options are backwards.

I usually seek medical attention after a night of light drinking. Really racking up some medical bills with all these MRIs, you guys.

I avoid it at all costs but my gf goes to the dr the moment she coughs

I pay too much for insurance not to use it. That said I don't go unless its really bad. Like the 5 days I thought I had food poisoning until it was some sort of stomach bug that 3 weeks of antibiotics killed. Last march I had walking pneumonia for about a week before getting that taken care of.

The real question is Wtf are kids getting into? I never got sick until my daughter started daycare.

I don't waste my money on health insurance, so I avoid going to the doctor. I do have a doctor, that I go to once a year, to get my blood pressure pills, and that is it.

Just watch the Doctors on TV and they can diagnose most ailments.

smh at people who don't go in, at the very least, for an annual exam--no matter how old you are

I go once a year for a checkup. I also go withouy hesitation anytime I think I am getting an ear or sinus infection.

Once I feel the need to start a thread on the OC about when others feel the need to go into the doctor's office.

This. Once I'm pretty sure I've crossed over to infection land I will go. Otherwise I just fight it off myself.

I'm back to every six months again as I have been in years past off and on. I've got High Blood Pressure and take meds for it. In the past I've blown off appointments only to have issues again and get back to the doctor, like being real dizzy from my High Blood Pressure. I'm due for more tests and a chest X-Ray before my next visit in Feb. I've been putting off the X-Ray in fear of what might be there...something doesn't feel right in my right lung. Not sure if it's an new issue or just pains still occurring form my shoulder reconstruction back from 2 years ago.

    Grads on beating Cancer :D

My wife would say that i would not go to the doctor until I was bleeding from my ears...:) When I turned 50 the VA called me in for a check up. I had cancer, high blood pressure and sugar type II ..never knew it ..operation, medication and i'm good .. two year after that cancer again but this time a different type.. The Lord stepped in a I was cured .. 10 years plus now and very little problems. I have regular check up, take the meds, work out and eat good food and small portions.

If I'm sick or my wife is ill for more that 4 or 5 days with no sign of improvement ... we head to the doctors

My ex-wife is a doctor and I call her all the time just to piss her off with really petty ailments.
