Scrap metal and copper thieves
-
Fab1bI haven't been a victim but this is obviously a huge problem. My question is how can or why do these metal places (whatever they are called) just accept any metal and copper from any Joe off the streets? I mean they have to realize that these pieces are being ripped off people's AC's, ect....

Fred FlintstoneI guy I know owns one of the places where you turn in your scrap metal for cash. By law he has to take your ID write down your license or ID number along with what you brought in. This is supposed to be some sort of deterrent, I guess.
-
justincredibleI believe the scrap yards around here are making people register before they can bring in scrap. I can't remember the exact details, but I believe there might be a background check involved. I could be way off, though.

thavoiceWouldnt be too diff to find someone to take it for ya I would imagine. Even if a crook has to use a middleman to do so.

A lot of drug addiction people do this. Some dumb ass kid I know of in St Paris got busted for scrapping. Thing he's going away for like eight years?Fred Flintstone;1067541 wrote:I guy I know owns one of the places where you turn in your scrap metal for cash. Having the heroin and being on probation didn't help things, either.
After a few trash bags worth of cans get saved up, usually will stop by the scrap yard on the way home from work. They also check ID's, even for cans. -
sportchamppsMany places don't follow the law if they know it is stolen. The worst cases of this is when tow trucks pull up to random cars broken down on the freeway hook them up and then scrap them
-
said_aouitaHeard on the news some dumb ass stole a bunch of copper then about a month later tried selling it back to the same scrap yard!

Raw Dawgin' itSounds like the wire...

mcburg93I was broken into a while back. I've done plumbing as a side job for years. I keep a lot if copper and black iron pipe in my garage. They took all the metal and tools even though it showed they were being recorded on a tv I have on the wall. They tried to cash in all the copper and black pipe without cutting it down into pieces. I guess scrap yards are not allowed to tale full length pieces. They called the cops and the guys were arrested while they were waiting to get paid. Got almost everything back so was happy. They only was able to sell a few drills.

ytownfootballSome tard here in the YTown area stole a bronze statue from Fellows Riverside Gardens located in Mill Creek park. Can't remember if he tried to scrap it or not but that was his intent. It ended up being returned. Funny thing is it was about $75 worth of scrap and several thousand bucks as a piece of art.
Scrap yard around here has a camera as well as registration requirements and it still doesn't deter some random dude dragging a pull along suitcase of crap down the street daily. -
sportchamppsI can tell you for a fact there are scrap yards in Columbus that break the law daily allowing people to scrap stolen property.
-
THE4RINGZI took some scrap wire in a couple of years ago. I had rewired a small building. My driver's license was photographed as was the material I took in.
-
said_aouitaI heard a rumor, recently from all the construction; stolen metal from the new Milton Union high school was tried to be sold at a scrap yard in Piqua.
I bet 609 is a suspect. -
GoPensIt sounds cold, but I chuckle when some moron tries to steal copper and gets electrocuted. Seem to read about it about once a month anymore. Darwinism at work.

Glory Daysmy parents had some scrap and tool stolen from property they were selling. the cops caught up with the guy halfway across ohio trying to sell scrap.

OSHIn my hometown in southeastern Ohio, a guy got shot while he was trying to do some scrapping.
This guy and two of his friends were driving around and stopped along the road where they found some scrap. Basically, they were scrapping at 11am on someone else's scrap -- i.e., thieving. The landowner came out and confronted the group. He fired off 5 shots or something like that with his .357 (I think that was it). One guy got hit two times and is now paralyzed from the waist down.
The landowner is in big trouble. The guy who got shot is sooooo upset that he got shot. It was for $40 worth of scrap. Him thieving ruined his life and the landowner's. -

That is horse shit in my opinion. The land owner shouldnt be in any trouble whatsoever if they were trespassing on private property and trying to rob him. I keep a loaded gun in my house because I live in off-campus housing in Akron where robberies are common. Is it worth me shooting somebody to protect myself/roommates/belongings if it means it will ruin my life?OSH;1068345 wrote:In my hometown in southeastern Ohio, a guy got shot while he was trying to do some scrapping.

While I agree...Ohio law doesn't permit a person to protect his/her belongings, it only permits to protect people. I believe I understood this right.Pick6;1068367 wrote:That is horse **** in my opinion. He could get out of it...possibly. He would have to have some "self-defense" claim. The problem is, there were two other witnesses who happen to be friends of the guy who got shot. It's hard to tell what happened with how everything was reported. Some say the guy was walking/running away. There could've been a confrontation and the landowner felt threatened -- it was 3 against 1.
Sucks. That's for sure. -

When did this happen? Do you have a news link? Sounds intriguing.OSH;1068345 wrote:In my hometown in southeastern Ohio, a guy got shot while he was trying to do some scrapping.

I just looked for some, can't find a single article.said_aouita;1068472 wrote:When did this happen? Do you have a news link? Sounds intriguing.
I found the abstract and a letter to the editor about it. I also found an archive for it, but you have to pay money to access it.
The shooting happened on December 15, 2011. I found out about it a week after that. It was front page of the newspaper, but my hometown newspaper is brand new to the internet...so it's definitely not there. I'll see what else I can dig up. -

TiernanTwo years ago a guy tried to steal copper at a 138kV power substation in WV and after he was literally fused to the transformer the EMTs used an axe to chop his cauterized hands away from the mainline feed after causing an outage to the whole town of Nitro. Since he was like blackened fried ham it took 4 days before his identity was known. According to police nobody missed him.

In Ohio, you are only permitted to use deadly force when someone is an unwanted intruder INSIDE your home. If they are outside your home, it is unlawful to use deadly force. However, with the passage of the Castle Doctrine several years back, you can shoot to kill if someone is in your house and is not an invited guest. No questions asked. Happened here in Toledo a few years back. Three guys broke into a house, the homeowner shot at them as they tried to run away. One ended up dying, nothing happened to the homeowner even though the guys were running away and unarmed.OSH;1068402 wrote:While I agree...Ohio law doesn't permit a person to protect his/her belongings, it only permits to protect people.
