sherm03I'm really surprised Samsung allowed those guys to film this. We had a co-worker going around CES to gather competitive intel, and when she took out her phone to take a picture of one of their devices, they were all over her telling her that no photos were allowed.
Also, that smart window is bad ass...and I would take one in a second. -

so you would tear out a wall in your house and replace a current window? how do these things work in the cold, or when the sun is beating on them all day? what about when its raining?sherm03;1057102 wrote:I'm really surprised Samsung allowed those guys to film this. Since when do you have to tear out a wall in your house to replace a window?Glory Days;1057699 wrote:so you would tear out a wall in your house and replace a current window? how do these things work in the cold, or when the sun is beating on them all day? what about when its raining?
Now, your second and third point are valid. I'm almost 100% positive that is something that they didn't think of. -

Well, it is what the market wants. People like this kind of shit, whether it is needed or not. So companies are going to produce products they know they can sell because there is a demand. You always talk about the market dictating the value of certain workers and products, this is just another exampple of what you already believe in.sleeper;1056666 wrote:Sorry. This is just another thing Americans don't need, but they will buy, and then complain or ask for a bailout when trouble arrives and they have no money to bail themselves out. I wish innovations in technology would be more focused on larger advancements like alternative energy, medical care, water purification, etc. It seems most of our innovations are about the next gadget we don't need or a new social network for your dogs. -

No where in my post do I complain or lament about the market. If anything, I'm complaining that Americans are the worst consumers.dwccrew;1058134 wrote:Well, it is what the market wants. I didn't say in that particular post. Perhaps the United States has the worst consumers, but you can't fault the companies for that. They are just giving the consumers what they want.sleeper;1058164 wrote:No where in my post do I complain or lament about the market. O-TrapAlso, if people stick to only buying what they need, the economy cannot thrive at the same level as if people are buying more than just what they need.

gutIt is pretty cool. Not sure where I could put/use it in the home - an actual window would perhaps make watching tv difficult, much less if a bird flew into it!
And no way that costs $250-$500. It's basically a glorified LCD computer monitor, and being transparent and that size no way it's less than $1000 (at least the 42" or so shown here, the 19" maybe for $500)
If it was thin enough, it would be kind of cool to put in front of a poster/print, so when it was off or transparent it's just like a picture frame. Or maybe put in a kitchen pass-thru could be convenient. -
Pick6Its pretty cool..but why would I want to play on a window in my house?
Kind of like the tablets. I have a laptop, and an iphone..what do I need a tablet for? -

Do you, sleeper, and Glory Days think every object that you guys don't specifically have a use for is pointless? -

I disagree. Look no further than China. They have a high savings rate and they have an economy that is growing at 9-10% per year.O-Trap;1058255 wrote:Also, if people stick to only buying what they need, the economy cannot thrive at the same level as if people are buying more than just what they need. -

I said useless, not pointless. No doubt people will buy it, but it won't improve the quality of life for anyone and will be mainly be used to show off wealth built on a house of cards.I Wear Pants;1058318 wrote:Maybe you don't, other people do.

This might not have a use for you but there are people who will find this mighty useful or who might *gasp* enjoy it.
If you're going to do the whole "it won't improve the quality of life" and "people who don't need it will buy it" thing then I expect you to be upset at every cell phone that comes out, computer, game, etc, etc.
Stupid people will poorly finance their lives no matter what. -

yes i literally meant the whole wall. however i am sure most windows dont have cables etc to connect to either.LJ;1057773 wrote:Somebody needs to watch more DIY Network -

You forgot to touch on your other concerns. I really do think they are valid. I doubt Samsung put much time into making sure this would function against the elements. I mean, who would think of something like that when developing a something in a window? I know I certainly wouldn't.Glory Days;1058451 wrote:yes i literally meant the whole wall. however i am sure most windows dont have cables etc to connect to either. -
justincredibleAlso, this could be pretty awesome and useful in a kitchen. The ability to pull up recipes without a laptop or tablet taking up counter space would be a fantastic benefit. For my wife.

Is it really worth $500 so you don't have to drag your laptop to the kitchen and use a foot of counter space?justincredible;1058541 wrote:Also, this could be pretty awesome and useful in a kitchen.
