Best Buy vs. Verizon
-
baseball4Ok, one last question about the iPhone purchase.
I was told that buying a phone from Best Buy over Verizon may be a good way to go. From what I understood the insurance coverage at Best Buy is better than what they offer at Verizon. I was also told about an insurance package through Apple where I buy a card or something up front and it's called Apple Care?
I was telling a guy at work about my frustration with Verizon insurance. I pay $10 monthly for coverage and then when I broke my screen I had to pay $100 to get a new phone. He was telling me that at Verizon you're not guaranteed a new phone. They will most likely give you a refurbished one.
Bottom line is I want to have good insurance. I wanted to get the phone tomorrow, but I think Verizon is backordered for like 2 weeks on the 4s.
Any suggestions?
What do you guys do? -
brutus161Just go with Apple Care.
-
j_crazyI prefer warming it in a skillet. But will eat it cold.

OSHI take care of my phone so I don't have to deal with this. I have only had two broken phones in 7+ years with a cell phone. One was a mystery and the other was completely accidental (which does happen). Now, if you are my wife...you get a new phone every year (it seems) because there's always a toilet to drop it in.
-
IliketurtlesMaybe you should take better care of your phone? I haven't purchased the insurance ever on my phone. But I have a Droid and I'm not worried about it breaking. Unlike Apple, Droids just work and are durable.
Buy a Droid /thread. -
I Wear PantsIt's likely that on your current insurance plan you aren't getting a new phone either. Probably a refurbished one but you can't tell the difference because they are the same.

Huh? My droid (Evo) is a piece of shit. I've never broke it or anything, but it isn't any more durable than an iphone. It actually feels cheap compared to the iphone.Iliketurtles;1039881 wrote:Maybe you should take better care of your phone? I haven't purchased the insurance ever on my phone. Buy a Droid /fanboy.
Apple people get shit all the time for this kind of thing but it happens both ways. He's not asking about what phone he should get. -
AutomatikI stay away from anything Best Buy. Just fork over the $100 for Apple Care+
ps. I just got the 4s 3 weeks ago and my insurance is an Otterbox. Fuck it. -

Haha it was more of a joke than anything since Apple is supposed to be so much better then everything else. Truly I agree with you that they are all pretty much the same.justincredible;1039887 wrote:Huh? My droid (Evo) is a piece of shit. Also Im not a Droid fan boy. I'm actually still using my OG Droid and waiting for the iPhone 5 to come out and hopefully it will be 4G. -
sherm03Don't know much about Apple Car. But I'm pretty sure Best Buy's Geek Squad protection is $15/month. Yes, Verizon's requires a $100 deductible (crazy that an insurance program would require a deductible...right? /sarcasm) but it's also $5/month cheaper. Using Best Buy's program, for the duration of your contract, is just like using Verizon's AND paying the deductible once.
Also, refurbished phones get a bad rap. Those phones actually have to go through more testing than brand new phones do. Give me a certified refurbished phone over a brand new phone any day. -

Only thing about refurbs is usually a lesser warranty. 3 months compared to a year usually for new phones when your purchase new ones. but for the most part it is alot cheaper so why not.sherm03;1040206 wrote:Don't know much about Apple Car. Liked your sarcasm comment about the deductible. What I always kinda laugh at is when someone does have a claim, broke their phone or whatnot, and they get a refurbished one and wonder why and think they shoudl get a new one. Well...if you send that phone in to get repaired and get it back...it isnt a new phone, it is your old crappy phone but just repaired. A refurb usually is gonna be better than your own phone repaired -

Ya...there would be less of a warranty. But if you have the insurance, it doesn't matter. The only time you need to worry about the warranty is if you don't opt for the insurance and are rolling the dice going through the manufacturer whenever something goes wrong. But most people don't buy refurbished phones. They just bitch when they get one because they smashed their old one, or dropped it in a toilet. So they file the claim and get a refurb and get pissed. In that case, who cares what the warranty is because you still have the insurance.thavoice;1040225 wrote:Only thing about refurbs is usually a lesser warranty. 3 months compared to a year usually for new phones when your purchase new ones. but for the most part it is alot cheaper so why not.

I call BS. I have the EVO and a bunch of other also have it on the ship. I've dropped mine a lot and nothing has happened. Now i've seen more damaged iphone/ipod touches than anything. Shattered glass is normal if you drop it even from a short distance.justincredible;1039887 wrote:Huh? My droid (Evo) is a piece of ****. I don't call BS. My Evo was a POS. Felt cheaper than the iPhone and the phone overall sucked.Ytowngirlinfla;1040272 wrote:I call BS. I have the EVO and a bunch of other also have it on the ship. Anyway, I have an iPhone 4 with no insurance. It comes with a 1 year limited warranty to begin with that covers mechanical issues, should you come across them.
Apple Care can be purchased up to 30 days from the day you bought your phone. It's $69 I believe, but covers almost everything. It is 2 years I believe.
If you are worried about your phone, just buy a nice case for it. There is a waterproof case that protects against drops as well for about 80 bucks. If anything happens to your phone while inside the case, they'll replace your phone. -

Call BS all you want. It's a piece of shit and feels cheap and plasticy. Like I said, it has never broke because I've never dropped it, but it feels cheaper than the 4 and 4s. And it's a piece of shit because it's buggy as fuck. -

All in all..the IPhones are pretty durable. When you consider how many people have them of course you are gonna have people breaking them.
