Why was Titanic highest grossing movie of all-time?

  The Titanic, released in 1997, has grossed 1.8 BILLION dollars worldwide.
  
  LOTR 3 is second with 1.1 billion.

  Ha, no. It was because teen/pre-teen girls went in droves to see the movie. *sigh* It's soooooo romantic. *Barf* It's the same thing with the Twilight films. Make something that appeals to young girls and they see it over and over and over and over and over, etc.
  
  I still remember going to see it at the theater(I don't know why now, it's not like you didn't know how the film ended) and there were young girls crying all over the theater. It sucked.

  I'm pretty sure though, that if you adjust for inflation movies like Gone With The Wind and Star Wars are much more popular. In fact, I looked it up, and Titanic is #6 all time if adjusted.

  Yeah, I don't know why they don't just go by total tickets sold instead of total dollars. That would give a more accurate picture.

  Bottom line is, this movie had a major plot, something many other movies, from today to yesterday, seriously lack. It's not because of the "love" story, it's all in the plot, the climax, everything supreme part a movie should have. While it may be boring to most of us guys(me included), it is without a doubt the most well-written and acted movie, EVER.

  It's really hard to adjust things like this because you can't just adjust for ticket price changes and inflation. You need to consider things like the advent of cable and HBO and the popularity of DVDs which have led to more people watching movies at home instead of going to the theatre to see movies. There are also so many more movie theatres around the world now. Marketing is different. Movies aren't quite the event they once were. So adjusting for time is very hard because it's a lot more than inflation.
  
  I think it's number one because of a perfect storm of events. It was simply the right movie at the right time. It was a historic event that people were interested in, it was a big name director, and some very good up-and-coming stars. It was also the first of the modern epic films. I remember that there was discussion when it came out if audiences could sit through a movie that long, and now all major dramas are 2-2.5 hours long. It was such an expensive film so it got a ton o press. It was promoted well. Mainly I think, like with all great movies, it comes down to story. It is a movie that tells a great story and that does it very well. And in the end, the story is what's most important in a movie.
