Why was Titanic highest grossing movie of all-time?
-
TheRapist SasquatchThe Titanic, released in 1997, has grossed 1.8 BILLION dollars worldwide.
LOTR 3 is second with 1.1 billion.
Why was the Titanic so popular? Was it because it was such a good film?
-
alwaysafanBecause (the younger) Rose was a babe!
-
gutBecause women watched it dozens of times.
-
v_falconsmaybe b/c of the actors popularity at that time and their great chemistry, mixed with it being a real life past tragic event in our history ..
-
raiderbuckSomeone's gotta be No. 1 I guess.
It was a decent movie IMO. Teh wemenz lurve the lurve story! -
tk421Ha, no. It was because teen/pre-teen girls went in droves to see the movie. *sigh* It's soooooo romantic. *Barf* It's the same thing with the Twilight films. Make something that appeals to young girls and they see it over and over and over and over and over, etc.
I still remember going to see it at the theater(I don't know why now, it's not like you didn't know how the film ended) and there were young girls crying all over the theater. It sucked. -
BuckeyeBlueI'm pretty sure though, that if you adjust for inflation movies like Gone With The Wind and Star Wars are much more popular. In fact, I looked it up, and Titanic is #6 all time if adjusted.

Glory Daysteen girls thats why. not because it was a good movie.
-
tk421Yeah, I don't know why they don't just go by total tickets sold instead of total dollars. That would give a more accurate picture.

That is only adjusting US box office receipts though.BuckeyeBlue wrote: I'm pretty sure though, that if you adjust for inflation movies like Gone With The Wind and Star Wars are much more popular. In fact, I looked it up, and Titanic is #6 all time if adjusted.

Also, this:
Titanic was only released once, whereas most of the other films were released multiple times.^ Indicates documented multiple theatrical releases. Most of the pre-1980 movies listed on this chart had multiple undocumentented releases over the years. The year shown is the first year of release.
Most pre-1980 pictures achieved their totals through multiple releases, especially Disney animated features which made much of their totals in the past few decades belying their original release dates in terms of adjustment. For example, Snow White has made $118,328,683 of its unadjusted $184,925,486 total since 1983. -
tuskytuffguyBottom line is, this movie had a major plot, something many other movies, from today to yesterday, seriously lack. It's not because of the "love" story, it's all in the plot, the climax, everything supreme part a movie should have. While it may be boring to most of us guys(me included), it is without a doubt the most well-written and acted movie, EVER.
-
Lovejoy1984I was 13, and I wanted to see some boob. And I imagine I wasn't the only teen/pre-teen at the time who felt the same way.
It ended up being a good movie though.
This was before I realized that teh interwebz was nothing but a giant porn warehouse. -
ytownfootballThe ending was THEE most retarded piece of theatical BS I've ever seen.
Leo...just find another piece of floating crap and friggin' climb on it. -

That wouldn't have been romantic. *swoon* Cause we all know nothing says romance than dieing because some woman won't move her ass over and share a freaking door.HighRoller74 wrote:

Thus this epic selection of filmography's eternal designation of Chic Flick. No dude who spent three hours watching it once would ever do so again.tk421 wrote:

Complete lack of rational ending coupled with a total disregard for logic=Chic Flick fail -
alwaysafanThe best ending would have been if Cal (is that his name--Rose's fiance?) died a fiery death. Never mess with a true romantic like Jack.

It's really hard to adjust things like this because you can't just adjust for ticket price changes and inflation. You need to consider things like the advent of cable and HBO and the popularity of DVDs which have led to more people watching movies at home instead of going to the theatre to see movies. There are also so many more movie theatres around the world now. Marketing is different. Movies aren't quite the event they once were. So adjusting for time is very hard because it's a lot more than inflation.BuckeyeBlue wrote: I'm pretty sure though, that if you adjust for inflation movies like Gone With The Wind and Star Wars are much more popular. I think it's number one because of a perfect storm of events. It was simply the right movie at the right time. It was a historic event that people were interested in, it was a big name director, and some very good up-and-coming stars. It was also the first of the modern epic films. I remember that there was discussion when it came out if audiences could sit through a movie that long, and now all major dramas are 2-2.5 hours long. It was such an expensive film so it got a ton o press. It was promoted well. Mainly I think, like with all great movies, it comes down to story. It is a movie that tells a great story and that does it very well. And in the end, the story is what's most important in a movie. -

that wouldn't exactly be a good measure when it comes to the all time list, given how much the population has increased over the yearstk421 wrote: Yeah, I don't know why they don't just go by total tickets sold instead of total dollars. That would give a more accurate picture.
you'd have to factor in percentages -
j_crazycan we get the full list? I'm curious what the highest grossing porno made (and what it was if not DDD).
-
NNNThis snorefest of over three hours had one redeeming part, and that was Kate Winslet's amazing rack.
-
3reppomThe primary reason that Titanic made so much money was that a ton of women saw it multiple times in the theaters
-
SonofanumpLeo was considered cute and Kate has a nice rack.
