Death penalty for or against

Agree with FFT. I don't see it as much of a deterrent, but I don't lose much sleep over it.

Against it. As noted by several above, mistakes can and have been made, and I feel it's better for us to pay the cost to warehouse the guilty than to kill an innocent person. This isn't Iran, Serbia, or Eastern Kentucky, where blood vengence for the family honor is more important than an individual life.

Just a quick question. How many people do you think have been wrongfully put to death in America? I don't doubt there have been people in our history but I don't think it's an overwhelming number. You apparently find it heinous to kill someone for a crime. Isn't the crime that person committed to put themselves in that position most likely heinous? I'm not saying you are accusing America for executing people who steal from Wal Mart but I have heard that argument before. I respect that you think people should be locked up in a cell instead of being put to death but I disagree. I also disagree that putting people to death in America is equal to people being killed in the Middle East.

Just one innocent person is enough. I'm for the death penalty, but only if there is over whelming evidence that the person is guilty. We shouldn't be having ANY innocent people being executed.

    I concur.

For it. Even for innocent people.

Still for it...the world is over populated.

The only thing about the death penalty that I am against is it has too strict of guidelines on who should be put to death. I'd put a lot more worthless POS to death if I was in charge.

Good points, and I understand the reasoning. But if we put even one innocent person to death, haven't we committed an equally heinous crime?

I would have no trouble with the execution of a stone-cold confessed child murderer. The trouble is that it's not possible to legislate for every future event - and once we turn the machine on, sooner or later innocent people are going to get caught up in the machine. I'd prefer to err on the side of caution - I don't feel we can't allow for "collateral damage" at that level in our justice system.

What if allowed a criminal the option to choose execution? I'd rather be dead than to spend the rest of my life locked up.

I think we need more death lottery kinds of things. Like the Roman arenas or Battle Royale. That kind of thing. Weed out the weak and dumb so their genes don't muck up humanity any more than necessary.

As long as we are putting people in them because they are dumb/weak and not because of any other reason. I think you are on to something.
