WhatsApp Messenger

Scarlet_BuckeyeAnyone use this?
I'm interested in lowering my SMS count, since I (unlike the rest of the world) do not have unlimited text messaging. I am greatly interested in using a messaging app to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. The only problem is, most of the solutions out there (e.g., BlackBerry Messenger, iMessage, etc.) are only good for single-platform messaging. And since my friends are about as displaced as the Chatter is (some have iOS, some have BB, some have Droid), a single-platform solution is not a great solution.
Hence I've done some research and I've stumbled upon WhatsApp. I've heard it's a great application, but unfortunately I don't know much about it (other than it's a cross-platform application and it allows users to sent mobile messaging over the internet (i.e., free) as opposed to SMS (i.e., pay).
In the past, I had a BB (now I have an iPhone) and, in an attempt to communicate with my friends, I tried getting those with smartphones to download & use Kik. The problem here is no one was crazy about downloading an app just for, really, one person (i.e., me) that they used it for/with; and second, now they had another app they had to manage/check.
Sooooo... my question is... for those who have or know more about WhatsApp than I do... does the person you are sending the message to have to have the app downloaded & installed? Or, does it work in some other fashion?
Any feedback on this app is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
(And to save dlazz sometime, let me get the proverbial "I don't have the app. Hope this helps" or some other terrible comeback out of the way).
Thanks. -

THE4RINGZHow do you have an iPhone without unlimited text messaging? I thought that (unlimited messaging) was part of the package you had to buy to use the iPhone.

No, it actually was not a cool story. It was a question.
No, it did not help; but thank you anyways for at least trying.karen lotz;982410 wrote:I have unlimited text messaging.

I have an iPhone without unlimited text messaging. I'm on a family plan. It's cheaper to have a set amount of text messages than an unlimited plan. #HopeThisExplanationHelpedTHE4RINGZ;982413 wrote:How do you have an iPhone without unlimited text messaging? Thank you for the honesty. It is, after all, the best policy.Steel Valley Football;982417 wrote:I use WhatsApp on my iPhone. I'm also very selfish and don't like to help others.

I was grandfathered in w/ 1000 texts a month, which is no longer an option w/ AT&T, you have to go unlimited or pay-per-text. iMessage has insured that I will never go over the 1000 a month.THE4RINGZ;982413 wrote:How do you have an iPhone without unlimited text messaging? I went with unlimited but I'm now very seriously considering going to imessage and pay per text. I remember being pissed off that AT&Fee charges $20 for unlimited while other companies only charge $5. I think they have a 500 texts for $5 or something which would be worth saving $15. I've been trying to keep track of how many non imessage texts I send to see if I'd go over or not.se-alum;982494 wrote:I was grandfathered in w/ 1000 texts a month, which is no longer an option w/ AT&T, you have to go unlimited or pay-per-text. iMessage has insured that I will never go over the 1000 a month. -
AutomatikI've been using it for a while now, basically BBM for any phone. I can text/send pics to friends overseas for free....works great.

Yes. It works with your number. So all they would need to do is have your number in their contacts and you will show up on WhatsAppScarlet_Buckeye;982504 wrote:But the friend, or friends, have to have it installed on their device too, correct? -
