Question about Amish Culture

    RAKE FIGHT!

  • THE4RINGZ
I see the rake fight is at Old Man Yoder's Barn. In the Amish culture you would have to be more specific, say something like "the fight is at Eli Yoder's Barn, that is Jacob, Noah's, Eli." Unless this old man Yoder has a nickname like Roofer Eli, then people would know who you are referring to. If you leave it at Old Man Yoder's Barn as the location of the fight, people will show up at about 23 different barns to try to see the fight.

Actually dutch is Deustch (German) with a lot of Bavarian mixed in. My dad is friends with a bunch of Amish and my wife speaks Bavarian and German so they are all shocked when she can talk to them.

The look on their faces when she starts talking to them is priceless.

We have had a Amish cleaning lady for the past several years. We have been to Amish weddings and their culture is very interesting. I still struggle with Christmas presents. They give us sweet rolls. We usually give them gift baskets of tea and candy. Any other suggestions?

    Somewhere near Randolph, I believe.

As for Amish, my dad gets his firewood from a mill a few miles from his house. My one aunt's family used to be Amish (that was when she was a kid) but has a lot of family members that are still Amish that I've visited at times during big family outings. The one funny thing is 'shunning'. Some Amish do it, others don't. My friend has only seen his parents once after leaving. That was a year or two ago (this was 7 or 8 years after leaving) and he was accepted with open arms. EXCEPT he couldn't sit at the table for dinner. He sat at a separate table/shelf/etc in the kitchen.

He's had a few brothers or sisters leave, but a few are steadfast Amish and try like crazy to 'bring them back' to the way. So, he tends to keep his distance from those ones.

I'm sorry. I thought it was pretty self explanatory that each Old Man Yoder was having their weekly Friday Night Rake Fight. I mean, that is what Amish people only do, right?

Last year around this time my daughter's pre-school class was working on learning about Thanksgiving and the traditions involved. My wife took her shopping out to Western T-County and Holmes County. She asked my wife why all the Pilgims were here. LOL... Priceless
