Current Reading Material - Anything Good?

I just recently finished "The End" by Ian Kershaw (sp?). It dealt with the question of why Nazi Germany held out for a relatively long time when it was fairly certain the war was lost. It looks at this question from the upper levels of power around Hitler down to the everyday citizen. Even as the country was being completely destroyed, government worked surprisingly well right until the end. And by virtue of the Germans holding out as long as they did, hundreds of thousands of lives were lost on all sides. The conclusions are not necessarily earth shattering, but interesting when tied all together.

I am now reading "Moonwalking with Einstein". It is written by a journalist who decided to enter the US Memory Championships. In doing so, he learned a lot about how memory works and how all of us have the ability to train our memories to be stronger if we chose.

I'd recommend both of those along with a book called "The Psychopath Test". Some on here may think I'm one, but I assure you I'm not. Anyway, an interesting examination of the mental health industry.

Steve Jobs' biography is pretty good and gives great detail about his life/career. Of course, I only mention this because I want to have his dead babies.

I've been reading Vince Flynn novels lately. I guess you could call them political thrillers, which follow a hit man named Mitch Rapp. They are pretty easy reads.

Doesn't matter what we post as it's evident by your threads that you are incapable of reading and thus cannot make use of our suggestions.

I am an avid reader and am always interested in suggestions. My reading tastes are all over the board with the exception of sci fi and fantasy. I can't get into that genre at all.

If you like the TV show "The Walking Dead", check out the novel "World War Z" by Max Brooks (son of Mel). Pretty interesting take on the zombie apocalypse genre. It actually takes the approach of an after-the-fact report on the causes/reactions/solutions to the "zombie problem".

I changed the title because I realized it was misleading. Glad you read it though.

I always recommend the Serge Storms series by Tim Dorsey. There are 12 books. The first one is Florida Roadkill. He is a serial killer, who only kills the bad people he crosses. He is wanted by the FBI and finds many many different ways to kill his prey. My favorite is making someone swallow those tablets that turn into foam dinosaurs.

Just downloaded the first book in this series but haven't started reading it yet. A patient said they were the best books he's ever read. So hopefully they're decent.

I was just going to post about these. I've read the first, but I'm waiting until the next season of the show is over to start the next. Amazing series and the book was just as good or better.

I may have to try them out.

The first 3 books are classics. I give each a 10 out of 10 and Storm of Swords an 11 out of 10 if possible. Not only are they among the best books in the genre. Storm of Swords is in my top 5 fictional books of any genre.

I enjoyed Feast for Crows more than most people, it is slower but the quality of writing was still good - 8 out of 10.

Heavily disappointed in Dance with Dragons, even less plot progression and a HUGH deterioration in quality of writing. Too many useless paragraphs, repetitiveness and inconsistencies with previous installments. I hope GRRM refinds his love for the story but I'm not optimistic. Still give it a 5 out of 10 for the Davos/Theon chapters.

Also adding these are not children's books. They involve very graphic descriptions of murder, incest, rape, bowel movements, etc. Another reason why I move Dance with Dragons down, it was far more vulgar than the previous books and GRRM is using shock value to make up for the lack of intriguing plotlines.

    Rep'd.

    I'm reading this book.

Based on the responses here, I started Game of Thrones yesterday. I'm not huge into the fantasy genre, but there is obviously a lot of passion about this series. Thanks for the suggestions.

I just finished The Sense of an Ending, by Julian Barnes. It won the Man Booker prize this year (for best English-language novel), and it deserved it. I think it's the best thing I've ever read.

Before that, Anthony Doerr's Memory Wall, which is a collection of sharp short stories. Solid, not great.

For Whom the Bell Tolls, which wasn't all that great, but I felt like I needed to get around to reading it.

Boomerang, which was downright bad. Michael Lewis is trying to play off his previous success by putting out something half-assed. It wasn't very good, and it wasn't very interesting, and it doesn't hold a candle to The Big Short.
