Adobe kills mobile flash

  • hoops23
On Wednesday, Adobe announced it will no longer be developing Flash, its media-player tool, for mobile devices. More than a few bloggers have noted the news would have been vindication for the late Apple co-founder, who felt betrayed by Adobe more than a decade ago.

In a post on the Adobe blog, company vice-president Danny Winokur said Flash has enabled the Web's richest content for a decade.

"However, HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively," he said, apparently a nod to Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod. "This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms."

Steve Jobs does work while being dead.

Ha, I was going to say somewhere Steve Jobs is smiling.

Not sure what this means for Android. It will adapt, or the browsers will do something about it. I don't watch a lot of video content on my phone, anyway. That's what tablets, laptops and tv's are for (although tablets would have the same issue as phones).

Does this mean my iPhone and iPad will now read all videos now that used to say I needed flash to view? I just bought Skyfire like three days ago.
  • I Wear Pants
No, that doesn't mean that at all SVF.

They are killing MOBILE Flash, not Flash.

And the videos wouldn't just magically switch over to HTML5 or something else because of this. Any Flash video will remain in that format until it's changed. Flash isn't going away for a while.

No he isn't...it's irrelevant to him. HTML5 is taking over.

Ok thanks for the info. Skyfire let's me watch almost all of them but it's not without its drawbacks.

This speaks volumes to Steve Jobs and Apple, and what they did to revolutionize the mobile industry.
  • I Wear Pants
    Um, no it doesn't?

How so? I think it speaks more to the fact that Adobe saw the writing on the wall when it comes to HTML5. Something that most modern browsers support or will support.

You can't win against Mactards. Don't even try.

I never installed flash on my Evo because flash sucks.

I don't care if this helps.

You're just mad that your website doesn't run in Flash.

Instead, it doesn't run at all most of the time.

    Thanks, Cloudfare.

Apple haters will say Steve Jobs had nothing to do with this, when every article that's been written about the story has said otherwise.

He didn't. HTML5 has been on the up and up for years and it is better than Flash in every aspect. It's pointless for Adobe to keep developing it.

But I'm sure you already knew that.

    Did Steve Jobs create HTML5?

If it ran on Flash it wouldn't work any of the time.

Jobs did not kill Flash (it isn't dead anyway), Jobs did not invent HTML5, etc.

All Jobs did was say Flash sucks. Which is largely true but everyone has said that.

And tons of writers attribute fucking everything to Jobs. If it's good they find a way to link it to him. Dude did a ton of stuff but people are starting to get ridiculous.

Glad to see Steve Jobs is being given credit for things he had nothing to do with even in death.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but yes, I knew HTML 5 has been around for quite sometime. Steve Jobs did not invent HTML 5, but once he couldn't get Adobe to agree to change a bit, he decided to advocate HTML 5.

As Jobs said, once Adobe's founder stepped down, Adobe went to hell.

However, Jobs had one of the most powerful and influential voices in America. When he spoke about something, people listened.

He denied Flash on his products. Mobile products that are market leaders. If people don't think that has anything to do with Adobe killing off Mobile flash, then they're crazy.

I would guess had Apple allowed Adobe to develop for iOS, Adobe wouldn't be killing mobile flash right now.

Lol, I get the whole argument with "apple vs Android" fanboys, boy I worry that you actually wanted to have Steve Jobs' babies. It is quite scary.

    LOLOLOLOL

    Lame as shit

I mention Jobs' 3 times and suddenly I want to partake in homosexual activities with Jobs and perform the impossible feat of having his children. Got it. GTFO.

Apple would not allow flash on iOS devices. Apple backs HTML 5. iOS devices take over market. Adobe announces they will no longer support mobile flash, but will get into HTML 5. As I said, if Apple allowed mobile flash on iOS, Adobe wouldn't be killing off mobile flash now.

Apple, Google, & Microsoft have backed the adoption of HTML5. Microsoft is said to be killing off silverlight for the same reasons as Adobe with flash. The fact you can build a html5 web application that works well in all mobile operating systems' browsers as well as a desktop browser has been pushing this movement.

hoops is oblivious to the point we're trying to make. Steve Jobs had no hand in this.
