Screw You Dealership!!!

    Saturday morning my wife and I went to an Athens dealership that we had bought two new cars from. I was looking at a used car that was $14,600 and that price due to some interior scratching and an abnormal number of surface scratches and bad touchups on the exterior. We test drove it and it was good but then decided to drive a 2011 with 6,400 miles. I take it out route 550 about 3 miles...nice ride and turn around. On the way back the engine light comes on and I ended up coasting back into the lot!!!! Once I tell the salesman he says "yeah, as soon as you guys took off I remembered it was brought back because the owner kept having these troubles."
    So I still like the original test drive and tell the guy to see what kind of numbers he could get. He comes back and throws a 60 month finance number at me (with trade in), I told him I'm only going 36 and he shoots this huge number. I ask him what they were giving on the trade in and he showed me $750!!!! Lol and they didn't come down a penny on theirs! And while waiting on him to come back the finance manager screams from his office "oh no, no FUCK, GOD DAMNIT, FUCK!!! Because he spilled his coffee. Classy

    So eventually we left laughing at their offer.

    Later that evening my wife takes 4 pictures and puts my car on Craigslist and at 5:45 tonight I sold my $750 car for $3250.

    I love when they just assume everyone is stupid. Makes you wonder how often people just jump at that 60 month number and go.

    The finance manager screaming expletives was ridiculous....and 3 minutes later he brought a couple in and said "now I fought real hard to get you this finance rate" Nice of him to pay all of their bills on time and in full over the years.

    1) A 36 month payment would be MUCH higher than a 60. No brainer.

    2) If you sold your car for $3250 (retail private party) then a $750 offer was probably fair in this scenario. Salespeople have to make money. The dealership probably could have sold your car for $3500. Getting it from you for $750, plus a $800 owner's "profit pack" puts the car at $1550 in cost. Selling it for $3550 is a $2000 profit for the dealership. A salesman would get 30% of that figure and receive $600. The average salesman sells 8 cars a month which would give him 4800/month for working 60 hours a week.

    I don't see a huge problem with this. They have to make a living or they won't have a business to run.

I honest to God held up traffic at the light before the dealership....took about 10 seconds to get up to 20 mph with numerous cars behind me and I coasted into the lot.....then ran my numbers at 4.99% while they gave the people in front of us 3.9%...and then under value my car at least $2000. "I've sold cars for over 15 years and this is a good deal".....yeah for them

    I had a number figured for the 36 month and they were ridiculously far off....and were not how one should manner themselves to a customer.

    I'm quite aware of the 36 to 60 month difference, give me a break.

    How about an apology for allowing me to test drive a car with engine troubles.....that they knew about.

    First point, I agree, a little careless. It's actually a trusting dealership, they shouldn't let you test drive a car alone.

    Second point, they ran numbers at 4.99% while someone in front of you got 3.99% (which is a minuscule difference in monthly payment to begin with) - if you are talking about a USED car, you have to be kidding me. 1) Did you have EXACTLY the same credit score as those in front of you and have the SAME car? Banks not only like credit score but also, the car you buy plays a factor in what interest rate they want to lend you. You can't make those comparisons. The banks make that decision.

    Third point, They have to make profit. I'm glad you sold your car for more. It would have been a fair deal for them. They have to make that much profit on used car deals or they can't make any money. You have to make money as a business to remain in business.

    Last week at the same type of Dealership we sat down and crunched the numbers and we received a 3.84% finance rate on the same year and almost identical priced same model car.....they initially offered $1500 for my car and came down $500 on theirs.....we were pretty close but thought I could get at least $3000 out of mine pretty easily.

    It is true that the other car dealership could use different lending banks, of which a 3.84 and a 4.99 could be "called in" for the same car. It's a very small difference though.

    I'm just saying that even if they took your car for $8 dollars on trade in the salesperson still isn't getting rich off your deal or the next deal for how the system works. And for how many hours they work, they aren't making more than most people do in 40 hour jobs. Even though it make seem that way.

    What they make a year shouldn't vary much from Portsmouth to Athens.....the Portsmouth dealership went out of their way to sell a car, were more than fair and the no sale was my doing. Athens was sneaky, rude and somewhat insulting....with some great levels of arrogance....and the most uncouth employee I've ever heard at any business.

    I'll be heading back to Portsmouth this Saturday.
