What's far more sad would be recognizing this for the partial truth that it is, and choosing not to do anything about it. If it's who you know, and you make no effort to get to know anyone who can help you get a job, that failure is on you and no one else.Mulva;935088 wrote:I think it's sad that who you know is more important than what you know.
The end of my thoughts on the topic. -

It's far easier to simply whine about it and look to the govt for a bigger handout.queencitybuckeye;935211 wrote:What's far more sad would be recognizing this for the partial truth that it is, and choosing not to do anything about it. You are misreading this.gut;935190 wrote:I think the issue is a lot muddier when you consider the govt contributed in no small part to the collapse to begin with. If it were all of their own doing, I'd agree, but saying the bailout is anti-free market when you didn't have a free market to begin with is somewhat circular logic. You can't be for or against govt intervention only when it suits you - if the govt contributes to a fuck-up they share responsibility in fixing it just like you would expect any business or person to. The govt housing mandate to Freddie and Fannie and the absurdly low interest rates were absolutely necessary ingredients to the financial meltdown - in other words, if the govt doesn't meddle in the free market to begin with they more than likely don't need to intervene later with the bailout.
The govt was a stakeholder in that mess and just like any other stakeholder they have to bear some of the loss. Except other than GM/Chrysler, it's not a handout - the govt gets their money back, plus interest, from the Wall Street bailout. So, again, I'm confused as to what exactly they are protesting and why target Wall Street. Well, I know why but their target is misguided - I haven't noticed any protesters outside the Capitol or the White House. These idiots are looking to the govt for a solution when the govt is clearly the biggest part of the problem. -

Then please enlighten me....What are they hoping to accomplish and how does protesting Wall Street accomplish it? Fair to say prices are too high and wages too low is a core tenet? So how do you propose they are going to alter the immutable laws of supply and demand - the power of positive thought?I Wear Pants;935640 wrote:You are misreading this.

dlazzWhat I like most about this "We are the 99%" bullshit is the fact that if the 1% finally gave up and asked them "what do you want us to do?" they'd just piss down their legs because they don't have a grasp on economics.

I would love to teach HS math/chemistry/physics and coach HS baseball/football but I also knew that if I wanted to support my family where my future wife (at the time) would only have to work if she wanted to, I needed to do something else.fan_from_texas;933418 wrote:I believe most of the stories. The question is whether we should care. I mean, so someone takes out $100K in student loans to major in Religious Studies. Why is it the fault of Wall Street that the person can't get a job?
I have some sympathy for 18-year-olds who have been fed crap by their parents/guidance counselors about "doing what they love" and then actually took that advice . . . but part of the blame should lie with the schools that extended them outrageous student loans that can't be discharged in bankruptcy.
So, I have a BS in Chem Eng, BS in Applied Math, and MS in Chem Eng.
If I won the lottery tomorrow I would go teach, but I took a degree in what I knew would keep me employed as an adult. -

My favorite one, sounds exactly like me when I was a senior in college, but you could add a wife and a child to the list for me .Iliketurtles;933639 wrote:

Even if you don't put it on a resume, they still ask the question on an application or in an interview.ManO'War;934265 wrote:If anyone is worried about not getting a job because they are "over-qualified", then don't put it on your resume/application.
I was laid off and went back to work on my MS at one point. I was turned down for jobs quite a few times for being over qualified.
I refused to lie on an application and not put that I had a BS when it asked for highest level of education, even the one time I was applying for a serving job at a Chile's restaurant. I also applied for a reactor operator's position at a chemical plant one time, scored perfect on every test they gave, even the simulated reaction processes. No one else in the "class" could "operate" the chemical reactor as well as I could. They even originally told me up front that they would have no problem hiring me even if I was "over qualified" educationally. In the end I got told "sorry, but you are over qualified". -

They told us the average starting salaries and I remember thinking surely I'm smarter than half the idiots I'm going to school with. When I graduated and interviewed with five or six different companies I remember thinking where the hell is all the money they promised me? Lol
I wasn't really complaining, because I didn't go into debt based on what they told me. I worked my way through school and went part time. Except for one year when I took out student loans I only took the classes I could afford to pay for. When I graduated I had less than $10k in student loans. But I do feel like their numbers were deceiving. The best job offer I received was $7k less than what they told me the average starting salary would be in my field.O-Trap;934194 wrote: Highlighted.
Again, it's not what is said. It's what isn't said.
It's no different than when I bought my first house. The mortgage broker approved me for a loan which would have put the payment at half of my take home pay. I told him he was crazy and bought something that kept my payment at about 33% of my income and really felt like I struggled to pull that off for a while.
My point isn't that someone else is responsible for what I can afford. They will give you a big song and dance about how much they want you to spend, but you can't believe all the bs they give you and it's on you to not go more into debt than you can afford. -
