healthy my ...aresss

  • Belly35
My mom cook with lard, we ate fatty meats, red meat cooked raw and drank whole milk. Sweeten with cane sugar, had white bread with every meal, pasta was a standard and a glass of wine with every meat (12 years old)
Seem like the magic age was 12 for have wine at a meal. Cakes, pies and cobbler were alway fresh.

Now .... 2% Milk, 1% Milk, multigran breads (I do like tuscan multigran however), artificial sweeteners, low fat cooking oils and mayo and everything else low fat / low cal or diet this and that... Don't eat red meat or fatty meat and stay away from sweets.
Low fat , low cal and diet crap ................ low flavor

Are we really better off and healthier now?
  • Jawbreaker
No but the more of the good stuff that people don't eat (red meat, whole milk, cane sugar, lard, etc.), the more there is for me.

As a kid many of us older OC'ers were outside playing until it became dark outside, and not inside, on our asses, playing video games, or on the computer, or watching TV, or on their damned cell phone.

Hell, it wasnt until I was 17 was there a video game system in the house, and as a kid we never had more that 5-8 channels of TV to watch.

Computer? Only time we had that was for about a week when dad would bring one home from school over christmas break, and at that each of us kid was allowed to play Oregon Trail ONCE per day.
    Cell phone? Yeah right.

People eat out too much nowadays and that can lead to blowing out your diet plans as well

Being able to post comprehensive posts isn't a requirement when you look like a pirate.

It is not just the kids. The same can be said of the adults as well. I rarely ever saw my parents, aunts and uncles or grandparents watch much television. As you mentioned there was no computers or videogame systems. My dad spent his time at home fixing things around the house or working on the car. My mom cleaned house and took care of/played with us kids. Today, a lot of adults come home from work and sit on the couch watching television all night and/or getting on the computer (Sorry OC). I guess you can add all of us to that list as well.

    No doubt about that!

Also people eat out way too much nowadays. Our town had zero fast food/commercial places to eat. Well, I guess one, Penquin Point, but we never ate there. For the most part you eat much more healthy when you cook your own meals. Now people are 'too busy' to really have a home meal. We didnt eat at the table much as a family mostly because our schedules were very hectic, but we always had home cooked meals that were better off than ordering some food from a restaurant.

It was a 'treat' for us to go out to eat and we rarely did so. We would go out to Pizza Hut for the book it program they had at the school where ya got a free personalized pizza. Other than that it was something pretty healthy at home from mom. NOwadays parents all too often are taking the easy way out and getting to go orders.

Many kids metabolism is good enough to waste that stuff away, but what it does is creats poor habits that they carry with them.

Nothing wrong with lard or butter really for that matter. Margarine is horrible for you as is the corn oil that restaurants cook with. Red meat is fine as long as the cow is grass feed. I'd bet the white bread from the 1950's is near the WW100% bread of today. White bread of today is sugar and starch. I'd rather put cane sugar in my body than artificial sweeteners.

    Hope this helps.

I think these foods are so healthy but always eat in limit because over eating is the main reason
of fatness, try to eat less and did exercise then you couldn't suffer in any problems like fat or other diseases.

    Incorrect. It is processed foods.
  • thePITman
When society is less active and more obese than ever before, it's important to focus on the foods we eat. We're not burning off as much of what we eat, so we better be focusing on what we put in our bodies.

I tend to agree with this. Portion control is way out of control. The amount of food people eat today is astounding. I guilty of this too. I was always taught to clear my plate before getting up from the table. Well that's fine when you are being served a reasonable size meal. Nowadays, what you put on one fo the huge plates every kitchen has is enough for 2-3. And that little voice is still in there, "you're not finished unitl it's all gone."
