I don't know if you're old enough to remember this, GoChiefs (or anyone else reading), but I remember a certain NWA title reign that reminds me of the Sheamus push/title win. Growing up, I didn't think anything about it, but after reading Scott Keith's analysis of it, I understand it.
Back in the mid/late 80s, Ric Flair was both the main booker and champion for the NWA. He wanted to drop the belt so he could chase it for a couple months and then regain it. The best guy who was willing to take the role of "substitute champ" was mid-carder Ronnie Garvin. When he was champ, NO ONE who was anyone was willing to job to him, so he basically was an invisible (at least in the ring) guy who occasionally beat jobbers before mercifully losing the belt to Flair.
Look at Sheamus now. On RAW, he owns clean wins over Jamie Noble and Santino and a kick to Lawler's face. And a stipulation-induced title win over Cena. Hell, they haven't even (as of now) fed MVP, Bourne or even Primo to him. All of whom are faces on RAW, all of whom are currently going nowhere.
This makes me wonder, now that Sheamus is champ.....what will be his biggest win before dropping the belt? Will they give him a clean TV win over even a mid-card face.....or just have him beat up the low-carders and nobodies until they can get the belt off him. With him being foreign and all.....you always can dust the mothballs off Jim Duggan and have Sheamus kill him....or feed Lawler to him to settle their differences.
Garvin came into the picture because the NWA's star face and next champion, Magnum TA, had career ending injuries from a car accident. The NWA was set to have their first PPV, Starrcade. The plan was for for Magum TA to win the title at Starrcade. With out of the picture, the promoter Jim Crockett still wanted a title change. He decided to have Flair lose the title prior to the PPV and for the Nature Boy to win it back at Starrcade. -
osu45804Sheamus is a "Trending Topic" on Twitter right now lol

King CurtisWhy am I not surprised.

LeonardoMaybe McMahon is tired of the internet ruining his show results and is fooling with the fans.

KnightXC1Kofi's push is not over by any stretch. He is probably the second biggest singles face on Raw behind Cena right now (Yes I'm not counting DX). He will continue to be put over on TV for the next few months likely leading to him winning Money in the Bank.
Too bad Jerishow lost even though it was pretty much a given. Not a bad PPV by any stretch though. -
ZeroCoolsheamus rocks.
the tag team title comes back to the rightful place. -
King CurtisKofi's main event push is over for the time being.
He could have really gone over with clean win tonight.
And the Heart Break Kunt just had be the one to climb the ladder and grab the titles. -
ZombieKillerI think Jerishow will get the titles back. Then maybe they can have Jericho/Show vs. Edge/Christian at Wrestlemania
-
ralphus33Sheamus has done nothing to impress me and I think it is retarded to give him the title. I remember several weeks back reading the interview for some magazine or website with Triple H. He said Sheamus was going to be one of the next stars and mentioned they had started training together. I couldn't help but laugh, but next thing I know Sheamus is traded to Raw and now he is the champ.
If Dennis Miller weren't hosting Raw tomorrow, I probably wouldn't even watch. -
KnightXC1Sheamus is pretty decent in the ring is on his way to being hated because he keeps beating up Cena. It's really not retarded to give him the title because if Cena beats him, it instantly kills any momentum he has built and sends him in oblivion. He may only hold the title for a few weeks but it is the smart decision to give him the belt.

tiger1990got to be some politics going on...Cena not wanting to do the job for someone, he drops the strap to Sheamus, who will in turn drop to another face. Kofi...?
-
ZombieKillerI do have a question..
Why did Cena lost the belt to Sheamus.. But couldn't lose any of his NON-TITLE matches to The Miz? -
enigmaaxWow, Sheamus. Gotta say, it's been a long time since WWE has done anything I really liked (or maybe cared about), but I think this was the right move. I didn't like the build (which didn't really exist), but not putting Shaemus over here would've made the whole Ventura angle completely meaningless - which is exactly what I expected. I wouldn't be surprised to see a quick return to Cena, but I think that would be the wrong move, too. The quick token reigns they've given people in the recent past hasn't done anything to elevate anyone or add value to the belt - hopefully they've learned that lesson.

Trueblue23WWE sucks
-
RedRider1I hope Sheamus can afford some jeans and a shirt now that he's a champ.
As a fellow redhead.....trust me, no one wants to see your paleness. -
Trueblue23I say Cena will get the belt back within 2 weeks
-
ZombieKillerI've read that Cena is doing the coin toss at the Fiesta Bowl. So its very possible he won't be at the Jan.3rd Raw.

ZeroCoolsince shaemus hasnt lost yet, they will not let him lose until a ppv. great move wwe. dx and shaemus will be the only reason i watch tonight.
-
krazie45I'm not big on the all of a sudden Shaemus push. He's basically Koslov with mic skills....I don't see him getting too much heel heat.
I can see DX turning on each other at some point during this title reign and we could see HBK-HHH at Wrestlemania. They've never faced each other at a Mania and I think it would be a pretty good match (only for the fact that Shawn would be carrying HHH throughout the match).
It's a shame to see Morrison lose to that bum McIntyer or whatever. He's the young superstar that needs the push but for some reason has never got it. He's got great ring skills, great mic skills, amazing athletic ability.....he's basically a poor man's mid-90s HBK. I don't see how dropping the IC belt helps him or the WWE and they need more main eventers on SD. -
Heretic
I wouldn't be surprised if Morrison dropped the IC belt so he could be moved into the main event scene. It looked like he was being moved there a few months back, but they had that drama with Rey not wanting to lose the belt to Ziggler and then getting Wellness'd, so Morrison, I think, was picked to hold the belt in place of Rey. Before that, he was having good matches and picking up a decent number of wins against Punk, J. Hardy and Jericho.krazie45 wrote: I'm not big on the all of a sudden Shaemus push. Kinda like how Kofi dropped the US belt to Miz.....so he could get moved into a bigger feud with Orton. -
ZombieKillerMorrison has a DVD coming out soon. (I think in Feb.) They are going to push him to the moon to promote it.
