US Marine awarded the Medal of Honor

  Dakota Meyer will be awarded the Medal of Honor on September 15th. He is the first living Marine to be honored in this war.

  Unbelievable how there have been only 3 living recipients and 2 have been recently.
  
  Edit: I must have misread that. Ther def has to be more living recipients than 3. Has anyone ever seen the list of benefits and privileges to having one. It's a pretty good deal, and much deserving.

  "The first is more money. The Department of Veterans Affairs gives them a $1,194 monthly pension. Plus there is a 10 percent increase in their retirement pay, provided it doesn't exceed the maximum allowed by law.
  
  The recipients also get to fly on military aircraft at no cost, if there is space available, and they and their families can use military recreation facilities like pools, bowling allies and golf courses.
  
  Recipients are also invited to all presidential inaugurations and the inauguration balls.
  
  There are also less formal benefits.
  For example, many military bases set aside a special parking space for Medal of Honor winners. There is an informal tradition that regardless of a service member's rank, even the top officers in the military salute them, rather than vice versa. And many states, including California, Iowa and Wisconsin, have special license plates that only a Medal of Honor recipient can put on his car, and some of those states waive the usual fees.
  
  Each Medal of Honor recipient's child, if they qualify, can go to a military academy without having to worry about the quota for his or her state.
  
  Finally, upon their death, a Medal of Honor recipient's grave is marked with a special headstone that bears the Medal of Honor symbol and special gold lettering to denote that service member's special status."

  Michael Monsoor jumped onto a grenade and saved a number of his fellow Team guys.
  Michael Murphy was awarded the MoH for his actions in Afghanistan. Much of his story can be read in the book Lone Survivor.

  The one that stands out to me is the children can attend any academy without the quota.

  The level of sacrifice and courage that it takes is just unbelievable. What is the saying.......bravery is fear holding on for one more second?

  As an FYI.....I hope this gets alot of good comments and thoughts, but from experience in posting similiar stuff like this in the past most people dont take the time comment. It is like too many people only care or care to comment when a servicemember does something wrong.

  Agreed, that is also the one that caught my attention the most. I wasn't aware of all the benefits until you mentioned it. Decided to look it up. Glad to see the medal actually means something other than "hey look, he got a medal".

  Yah I did post that because I did alot of training with him. I am not trying to impress anyone. All I fucking stated was I'll be attending the ceremony as a guest. I made a simple statement about attending his ceremony because I know him.

  Yes its about this marine. What he did for his country is a very very great thing and nobody is trying to deny that. All someone said is that recently theres been a few living recipients of the MOH. Not trying to take anything away from the marine, or diminishing what he did, and immediately become defensive for no reason at all lol
