I suppose. But we could also behead them and then shoot the bodies.

Old people don't matter, might as well kill them for sport.

    I guess that's your mindset.

I guess I have two points here. 1. Would the people in the car have died if they had been 45 instead of 85? Chances are that age factored into the ladies not being able to see the stop sign and not being able to avoid crashing. 2. Do these kids who have a full life ahead of them deserve to have it ruined because of a stupid mistake?

Obviously I'm not absolving these guys of blame as it is incredibly stupid to cover up a stop sign. But to pretend the age of these women played no part in their death is just being unrealistic.
They might deserve it because this goes beyond a stupid mistake. However the important question for me is not what people deserve but what would be most beneficial to society as a whole (when taking into account likeliness to be repeat offenders, cost of convictions, cost of eventual welfare support because of inability to get jobs due to being a felon, etc, etc). That I think is the real question we should ask regarding any crime.

For this I'd say anywhere from 2-5 years would be appropriate. But that's just me.

No they matter, but 10 years in jail because they partially covered up a stop sign (i mean seriously look at the picture, its nto like they removed the stop sign) is a little harsh imo

so someone who shoots someone in the head and kills them instantly should receive more punishment than someone who shoots someone in the leg and bleeds to death?

what time of day was this? easy to say when you are looking at a picture of it from 3ft away and not moving 45-55 mph down a country road.

If it was at night it shoulda been even easier to identify. Arent most stop signs relfective?

    Irrelevant.

Only things relevant are: did they cover the sign?

    and

What are the legal ramifications of covering a stop sign given that it caused a fatal accident?

You know that traffic signs are designed to stand out? If you are looking for a stop sign, sure, you can figure it out. If you're driving down the road, it isn't necessarily going to catch your eye.

If im driving down a country road and see something half wrapped in plastic on the side of the road and the other half is bright red...pretty sure id notice it.

More correctly, it's because they killed two human beings. This isn't some civil matter where relative negligence comes into play. They committed a crime, and because they did two people are dead. Trying to shift any of the blame here frankly just makes one seem ridiculous.

Agreed, stupid ass thing to do, they will get what they deserve.

These 18/19 year olds obviously are not productive members of society. They obviously are fucked up in the head if they think covering a stop sign is hilarious.

I'd be surprised if their lives amount to anything, honestly... Jailtime or not, so therefore I do not give a shit what happens to them. They should be locked up for a good amount of time though.

Shit, if people want to make the 85 year old at fault, because she's old, I'll take the stance that these guys are worthless members to society and have no place.

You suppose? How about it is. Remember when Mike Doss was arrested for illegally discharging a firearm? Don't you think he'd be charged with a lot more if the bullet hit and killed someone?

In a sense this situation is worse, what on earth were these idiots thinking? It takes a special type of stupid to do something like this, I don't care what sentence they get (although prison time is certainly warranted), I just hope they don't reproduce.

the white lettering is. there wasnt much visible in those pictures.

that sign was much more than half wrapped. maybe only a quarter of it was visible.

Exactly. Also, for those of you who want to place blame anywhere than squarely on the "kids" who covered the sign, would your tune change if you were the driver who hit and killed the ladies? I think calling this a prank is a sign of complete disrespect for human life. Bottom line, two people died from the actions that took place and the ruling should be based solely on that.

After think about this I think the 2 men who covered the sign should be given the choice of jail time 3-5 years per death or join the army, given basic training and deployed to a front line position in Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other hot zone in the world. Maybe give them long sticks and have them look for landmines.

Not only that, what if it was your grandmother or mother who died from it? I'm sure it would have just been a "stupid prank" then...

I'd always be fine with that alternative.

i think that the sign was fully covered and by the time the picture was taken someone had partially removed some of the cellophane

That is kind of what I think. It looks like it was covered more and some of it has come off or been removed.
