Why does Apple have AppleCare?

    Apple promotes itself on being the premier computer hardware and software company in the world. Their business model is built around offering quality products and in return the customer has to pay a heavy premium in order to obtain such products.

    However, Apple also offers an expensive 3-year warranty program that covers everything that could go wrong with a computer for 3 years(outside of accidental damage, etc.). But if a company is built on the premise that their quality is better than their competitors, why ever have AppleCare?

    I've owned a MacBook Pro for a little over a year and I can't tell you how many hardware and software issues I've had. I did not purchase AppleCare because I was hoodwinked by the quality that I, in the end, did not receive. Luckily, I am intelligent and resourceful enough to fix issues on my own, but I feel many do not understand that APPLE =/= Quality.

    I will never purchase another Apple product and you can take that to the bank.

    Sucks to be you. My wife's macbook is running strong on 4 years with no issues and I've had 2 Macbook Pros with no issues.

    Yeah Apple products are quality products, but it's still a fuckin computer, shits gonna go wrong with it.

    If you're going to charge $1000 more than what a product is worth, it should take more than a year for something to go wrong with it. I don't have a problem with Apple selling a warranty product, but I do have a problem with a company claiming superior quality and charging more for it.

    Can it not be a superior product and a warranty program?

    Apple is reeeallly expensive (I konw, I own a macbook)...but it's still a great laptop and i've had to take it to applecare once before; it's well worth it.

    Go back to business school. There is a failure rate associated with any product. I always laugh when 1 person gets a defective product and thinks that their personal situation speaks for the overall quality of a product/company.

    Sleeper, use the money you get from that fabulous job you were able to get because of your Ohio State education to buy a PC

    I always laugh when people try and pretend I don't know what a failure rate is, or that I don't have enough money to buy a new computer. Apple is a fraud, end of story.

    I've had the same MacBoom for 5 years now. 0 problems outside of a failed HDD, but Apple doesn't make HDD so I can't blame them on that.

    Point is, why does Apple have AppleCare? Same reason why Porsche has a warranty, I guess... No matter how expensive a product is, or how high quality, there is always a chance something goes wrong with moving parts.

    Also, AppleCare really is not that much more expensive then any other warranty offerings.

    How much is it? I paid $200 for my 3 year HP warranty which covers everything (accident protection).

    It depends on the product, but the 13" MacBook pro, the MacBook Air, and the 15" MacBook pro are all $249 for 3 years.

    Products like the iPhone/iPod touch are $69

    I get what Sleeper is saying. In a sense, at least I think, what he is saying is if they are going to charge so much more for their products, they shouldn't charge extra for a warranty, the warranty should be included with the original purchase price. However, knowing that going in to the sale you would not be covered by a warranty, since Apple forces you to purchase the warranty seperately, you should have just not purchased the product. Live and learn.

    There is a limited 1 year warranty included with all Apple products that covers manufacturer defects/harware/software failure during that year.

    Within that limited 1 year warranty, you can purchase AppleCare at any time if you wish. However, Apple is a business, a business that has a goal to make a lot of money and they've been successful doing that. You shouldn't expect anything to be given to you, you should be educated on the product, the warranty situation, and the prices before you go in for a purchase.

    This is Sleeper stirring the pot, again, I doubt he even owns a MBP.

    We are in agreement. This is pretty much what I was saying in my first post. I just understand the frustration of Sleeper (if he is being truthful) is what I was eluding to, but as I said, having the knowledge going into the sale, no one can be mad since the terms were known ahead of time. And no man made product is perfect.

    Man just don't buy them anymore. I had the same issues, and when I began looking for how to edit the registry in order to fix the issue ... I leaned I couldn't.

    Just don't buy it anymore. No reason to stir up all the Mac followers on here.

    Do luxury car manufacturers charge more for extended warranties? You probably get the base warranty (like the 1 year with Apple) but have to pay extra to extend it. I'm just guessing, though.
