Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson lay in a coffin, draped in an American flag, in front of a tearful audience mourning his death in Afghanistan. Soon an old friend appeared, and like a fellow soldier on a battlefield, his loyal dog refused to leave him behind.
Tumilson’s Labrador retriever, Hawkeye, was photographed lying by Tumilson’s casket in a heart-wrenching image taken at the funeral service in Tumilson’s hometown of Rockford, Iowa, earlier this week. Hawkeye walked up to the casket at the beginning of the service and then dropped down with a heaving sigh as about 1,500 mourners witnessed a dog accompanying his master until the end, reported CBS.

There is a special bond between a man and his dog. Some things cannot be explained. Great photograph.

This is why I love dogs so much. They can sense the human emotions. My Golden Retriever is always there to lay next to me when I am sad about something and they always seem to know when something is wrong with you. This picture takes it to a whole new level. It shows how emotionally attached dogs are to us as well. You can see the heartache that Lab is going through right now without his owner. So sad.

The amazing this about dogs is that if/when they die, we feel just as sad and mourn their life as the dogs do for ours. An amazing bond between two species who can't "truly" communicate or interact with each other in any normal way.

There's a reason that putting down a dog, an old friend, is one of the hardest things anyone will ever go through. In my 24-year life, I've had to put down two 16-year old dogs that I grew up with. Toughest times ever, especially the latest (a lab) just 2 months ago. I had a co-worker whose 15-year old lab has passed within the last day or so. Toughest times, but it makes you realize how good companions and friends they really are. They never complain. All they want to do is be with people, have fun, play, and comfort their human buddies.

I find that I just can't be friends with people that don't like dogs. This story is sad and awesome at the same time.
