Time outs

My wife and I are not against spanking and I'm sure we will at some point (our daughter just turned 1), but we will go the time out route from the beginning and make that work.

You just need to start it young (around 2) and be consistent and not give in to the little turds.

10 minutes seems really long to me. Did they say how old they were? (I'm thinking if they were old enough to stand there for 10 minutes, they were too old to be put in time out, but that's just me.)
10 minutes would be a long time for sure. I'm sure the guy exaggerated. He was talking about what his parents did to him as a kid, but didn't say how old.

Maybe it just felt like 10 minutes to him when he was a kid. :D

I know someone who's dad used to whack him on the head with a screw driver handle when he was bad.

I wouldn't think time-out (or for that matter, the quick swat on the butt) would be effective as a punishment much past age five or so - definitely not at age nine. There are times when you just need to get an older kid out of a situation for a few minutes - but that's not really a punishment.

Lady D'Friskies still uses spanking to keep me in line - as an incentive. :)
