Brawling brothers...

  • majorspark
I have three brothers. I am the oldest and only brawled with my brother that was about 18 months younger than me. During our teenage years we had many a brawl. Holes in the drywall and damaged doors. My dad would get so pissed at us.

One time when I was 17 and enjoying a bowl of oatmeal. I had my feet kicked up on the coffee table and the bowl resting just below my chin on a pillow because it was hot. The bowl was ceramic. I was giving my younger brother some shit about something (can't remember what it was). He had a temper and kicked the pillow knocking the bowl into my front teeth.

I ran my tongue across my teeth and realized one of my front teeth was chipped. I was enraged. I was a good looking young man and was going out with a hot chick at the time (now my wife). Thoughts of looking like a hillbilly instantly ran through my head. I saw red and it was on. Of course my brother knew I was fixing to kick his ass and bolted upstairs to my dad.

Dad was in the bathroom and my brother quickly ran around him. Dad put his arms out to separate us. I waited until dad eased up when he thought we were calmed down. Then I gave my brother the left hook around my dad right across the chops. Thankfully the dentist was able to repair the damage.

I bring this up becuase I have two teenage boys roughly the same age. They are both 6'+. When they fight it is like a bar room brawl. They just got into it tonight. My wife gets all out of joint when this happens. She grew up with just her and her brother who was several years older than she was. They fought but not like this. She fears they are going to be violent adults. I tell her to look at my brother and I. Not only are we not violent our relationship is the closest of all our brothers.

My brother and I look back (realizing how stupid we were) about our most infamous brawl. It happened in the cab of my buddy's dad's pickup. As teenagers during summer break we would do some fishing. We were able to get our hands on some beer. We headed off to the Beach City Dam. After we were finished we threw the empties in the bed of the pickup with our fishing poles. Every one grabbed one for the road. There were 4 of us. I sat next to the driver, one of my buddies was sitting next to me, and my brother was sitting against the passenger door.

We were all wearing shorts and my brother had enough beer to think he could put his cigarette out on my bare leg. It was on. I threw a few punches then the driver yelled there is a cop right behind us. We look back and the lights came on. We shoved our nearly full beers under the seat. I tried to put mine under the seat but that hump was in the way and the beer spilled out onto the floor. The officer asked us what we were doing. We said fishing. He asked us what was on the floor we told him it was water. He glanced back into the bed of the pickup and asked us about the empty beer cans. My buddy said they were his Dad's. He asked us where we were heading. We said home, Walnut Creek. He said go straight there and let us go.

To this day we have no idea why he let us go. This was back in the 80's but we should have been rung up. At least for underage consumption.

A good fight between brothers is healthy every once in a while, no harm no foul

I still don't think my parents have found all the holes we put in walls fighting growing up. And my mom thought we bought her a new painting for no reason at all.

You sound like you come from a dysfunctional family and now you have passed on that gene to your sons. You and your sons all have anger management problems. Get some professional help soon before it is too late. Good luck.

I did grow up in a very dysfunctional family. My basic family unit ceased to function at all like it should have when my Mom finally left for good when I was about 11yrs old to pursue the "freedoms" of the party life. You know the one she missed from getting married so young. She got to be Mom every other weekend. Leaving my Dad with an 11, 8, and 3yr old. My paternal grandparents stepped in to help Dad. Dad worked midnights at the time in the strip mines.

I don't subscribe to the "gene" thing. But definitely have learned a few bad character traits from my parents. I learned a lot of good ones too. Support your family with hard work, love, and sacrifice. Primarily though from my Dad and Grandparents. Mom came along much later in life.

All three of us that grew up in that dysfunctional situation we were handed are doing well. I have a bachelors degree in industrial engineering. I have worked in engineering, IT, and own my own business. My two younger brothers did not attend college. But both were successful business owners. No, all of our family situations are not perfect. But all three of us have been married to the same women all our lives. Myself 19yrs, younger bro 16yrs, younger bro 6yrs. Damn genes.

I have a 3rd brother. He was born long after my Mom left. His father died tragically before he was born. He was raised solely by my Mom during her party lifestyle. He was in constant trouble during his youth. Spent a lot of time in juvenile detention. Never graduated high school. He has been court ordered to get his GED. He ignored it. Because of his own actions he has an upper level elementary education in general. I have tutored him at times and he can learn high levels of math. He refuses to see its use and is blinded by drugs. He is a year older than my daughter. Today he sits in the state pen. Next week my daughter heads of to college. Its not genes its environment. I am going to pay him a visit. I have not talked to him in months. I have warned him of his fate. Maybe he will listen. Maybe not. I don't know. At least he is off the drugs while he is incarcerated.
