SHANGHAI -- Ryan Lochte not only beat Michael Phelps in consecutive races -- he's taken swimming to record-setting levels.
"That one frustrated me more than anything," Phelps said. "I thought I was going to get that one." -

SHANGHAI -- Ryan Lochte continued to be the dominant swimmer of this year's world championships, winning his third individual gold in the 200-meter backstroke and anchoring the U.S. men to their fourth consecutive world title in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay Friday.
After winning the 200 back in a personal-best one minute, 52.96 seconds, Lochte swam the fastest relay leg of the night (1:44.56) to pull ahead of France and give the U.S. men a winning margin of more than two seconds.

ironman02Lochte is the best swimmer in the world at the moment. Unlike Phelps, he has been training consistently and working hard. I would expect the two losses to Lochte to finally give Phelps the motivation that he needs to prepare for London in 2012. If that happens, I would think that Phelps will most likely return to dominance, but Lochte has proven that there's not a gap between he and Phelps anymore. Should make for a great rivalry between good friends at the Olympics next year.

Agreed, but Phelps won't dominate. Ryan has confidence. Phelps will definitely work harder after this week. Its his 2nd wake up call in 6 months. -
Speedofsandthe swimming races are on NBC now. also online here

Phelps won gold in the 100 fly. -
ironman02By dominance, I meant winning all the time. If, and I emphasize if, he beats Lochte in the 200 Free or 200 IM it'll definitely be a close battle.

SpeedofsandPhelps just needs to work. London should have a couple of epic races for he and Ryan.
Ryan blew away the field this morning in the 400 IM. Here is the video.

"Lochte in 1st, daylight in 2nd". haaha, USA's Tyler Clary won Silver, 4 seconds behind. -
Fly4FunWith regards to that Medley Relay...
I came in second to Nick Thoman (the backstroke leg of the relay) many a times in backstroke throughout my swimming career. He's a good guy, the first time I swam against him in high school in a meet in Kentucky, my coach told me to just go all out in the 200 back. I kept up with him for the 1st 100 then died off and finished about 5 seconds behind him at the time. After the race he came up and we chatted for a bit. He was surprised someone kept up with him as long as I did because by the seed times no one should have been close.
I know, cool story bro.
Note # 2:
Two of the members of that Gold 400 Medley team are from Ohio. Nick Thoman is from Cincinnati and Mark Gangloff is from Akron. -
SpeedofsandFly4Fun, that is cool, I didn't know those guys were from Ohio. NBC is showing the 200 free race between Phelps and Lochte now.
Lochte and Rex Tullius are from Daytona. Rex was almost on the '08 Olympic team. I've met Ryan a couple times, I know his dad and sister from school at Daytona State.
