Home School = Socially Inept

Belly35Home School = Socially Inept
It would be wrong to classify “all” home school individuals into this socially inept category. However the majority of the ones that I have known are “Socially Inept”. -
Scooter1369I only know a few kids who are home schooled, but I know them through my older daughter's Girl Scout troop. They are a troop of 13 and 14 year olds that have been together since kindergarten. They get their social interaction through clubs and sports away from school. They seem to be socially on par with the rest of the girls in the troop, but their parents have gone out of their way to make sure their daughters get social interaction with other kids their age. Not all home schooling parents make that kind of effort.

LJOne of my best friend's was homeschooled. His parents made him do tons of social activties throughout middle school and high school. Other than being extremely strong in his religious convictions, he is socially normal.
-
GoChiefsKnow a guy that was home schooled as well. Not only is he socially inept, he's half retarded as well. Having mommy teach him probably wasn't the best idea.
-
se-alumWe have family friends, who are very strong in their religious beliefs, that home schooled their children. One is completely normal, the other is a cross-dressing homosexual.

I just want to clarify this, he wasn't home schooled due to religious beliefs. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 7 and homeschooling was the only way his parents could properly monitor it when he was a child and he made the choice in 7th grade to stay home schooled. -
Con_AlmaA couple that live down the road gave up one of their practices to stay at home and "home school" their 5 kids. He's an OBGYN and she was a dentist. The oldest kid is in his first year at West Point. Not bad for being socially inept.

Skyhook79From the "Urban dictionary" Socially Inept:
"Unable to judge and improvise interactions with other people in a acceptable or 'normal' manner. By a mix of being too keen or plain ignorant the socially inept seem to live in their own world exempt from who they're talking to."
I would say many people could fall into that category not just the Home schooled. -
thePITmanIt definitely depends on the parents and the REASON they home-school their children. I know 4-5 families very well which home-school their children, and all of those kids have come out to be great men and women just like anyone else, and you would never know the difference.
-
power iI think alot of kids are home schooled because they have some issues to begin with, or their parents are just wackadoodles. There is a woman who lives down the street from my parents who 'home schools' her kids and a few other kids, and they all have some serious issues.
I also know a woman who home schooled her son until he was a freshman then let him make the decision to go to public school. He did fine.
So like everything else, it just depends on the kid (and the parents). -
Scooter1369Lets all remember the mighty Tim Tebow was home schooled.

thavoiceAgreed.
Want to know what else is making kids socially inept?
Cell phones and texting.
Was on vacation few weeks ago. Stopped at Cumberland falls for a day. Saw a group of like 15 or so HS kids who were there on a trip. They were sitting there by the falls...and I am thinking someone could fall off the falls and none of them woulda noticed as they were texting/email or whatever on their phones. -

My experience has been the complete opposite. I will say that home schooling adds a new dimension to teachers hooking up with students. -

??? That's not really an example of kids being socially inept. Is it?
Stupid, yes. Socially inept?? I'm don't think so. -
areyoukiddingmeMy son is home-schooled and is very active with his friends, sports, etc. I agree with someone above who stated that the parents have to monitor it and make sure their kids are active in a various amount of activities outside of the home.
I will also say that with the new online academies and the way the school systems are getting, you're going to find a lot more kids staying at home in the next decade than we ever imagined. Could be good and/or bad for society years to come. -

I think so. Kids are losing how to interact with someone on a personal basis. They are losing the ability to effectively communicate face to face and it is sad. step daugher would have friends over. They would sit there...text OTHER people and then comment what their other friends say. The actual personal communication between them all was limited, but they were always texting other poeple and the only things they really talked about was comments other people had to what they said. -

Explain how this is an example of social ineptitude. -
thavoiceO-Trap;844268 wrote:Explain how this is an example of social ineptitude.
Because kids are losing how to communicate face to face. They bury themselves into their phones, ipods and computers. They know how to communicate electronically, but face to face......that is lacking. -

I don't disagree with that but the example that was given and that I responded to had nothing to do with social ineptitude.thavoice;844266 wrote:I think so. Never has there been so many different ways to communicate and so little communication of substance. -

Didnt portray it well I guess. What I meant was that all these kids sitting around and all they could do is text other people instead of interacting with others in their group. -
