When a woman says "My significant other"

  Very, very attractive brunette in our building (yep, fabby...infatuated with them) is here once every week or so. Actually bumped into her and we spoke for a few minutes for the first time. Of course a little bit in the ole "my significant other' comment comes out. Of course, I tune out everything she said after that but stilll......
  
  she gave no name to reference it as a guy or gal...and I was curious...

  I'm pretty sure when ANYONE says "significant other" it is a neutral way to mention one's committed relationship partner, be it husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, fiance, etc.

  Anyone can say significant other, and it just means their exclusive partner (married, engaged, dating, etc).

  My experience has been that homosexuals usually refer to their "partner". My guess would be that she's referring to a boyfriend.

  Other than being pretentious/cute/derogatory I think it's a way for women to make more of their relationship with their boyfriend than it is - it's not a fiancee but it's a SIGNIFICANT other
  
  But I've really never thought about it. Sounds like what you want people to tell you is it means "lesbian partner" so you can go buy some lotion.

  I've always just taken it as #3. Just professional/polite way of saying you are in a relationship with somone of the opposite sex. People who date someone of the same sex generally refer to them as there partner or just say boyfriend/girlfriend.

  She's too depressed to not be in a more committed relationship, so she uses "Significant Other" as a facade to the world. Or, it could be a way of saying, "I'm not interested" without being called if you find out she's not engaged, married, or is considered to be in a relationship and just currently dating. No harm, no foul.
  
  The few lesbians I've talked to have always referred to their SO as simply their girlfriend and leave it a bit ambiguous whether they're lesbians or just straight friends.

  I told her I didn't want to be that serious, which is why she refers to me as her significant other. I consider her one of my significant manys.

  For my wife and I , "significant other" was more comfortable than referring to my daughter's now-husband as her "boyfriend" when he was in his mid-20's.
  
  Other the other hand, most women don't seem to have any problems with being labeled "girlfriend" well past age 29 (unless they're barking about not being called "wife").
