70 MPH speed limit. Better traffic flow?

I dont really see alot of people going under the limit on the highways actually.

For instance, a large part of US 35 between Gallipolis and Chillicothe is 60mph, even w/ a part of that being limited access. Then, just West of Chillicothe on US 35, the speed limit is 65mph. All of this is 4-lane highway. It makes zero sense.

Usuually has to do with how the area is zoned.

Indiana is way worse than Ohio in that regard.

I think the problem with Ohio is there are so many more semi's then in other states. Anytime I travel on I-75 to go south I see so many more in Ohio then in other states.

come to louisiana. 70 mph speedlimits and still fucked.

the speed limit doesn't matter when the roads suck ass and there are 10,000 cars on roads (and lots of bridges) that were designed for 5,000 cars.

I do agree that a national speed limit of 70 needs to be mandated (states like texas have different speeds at night but that is cool with me).

Aren't Louisiana State Troopers dicks as well?

WTF when wasn’t the speed limit 70MPH in Ohio?

Back in the 60/70’s …. 70 MPH was the slowest you could go 85-90 MPH was standard
  • Pick6
When I drive back home from school, or anywhere for that matter, I set the cruise on 80 and just keep a close eye out for the statey's.

True, Ohio is lucky to have major thoroughfares for shipping, which means alot of truck traffic. Unfortunately, the corporate tax is so high, that we don't use what we have to its maximum potential, but thats for a different thread.

It was 65 until just a few years ago. I can remember when SR 15 by Findlay was 55.

    Wait, it's 65 now. I've confused myself!

Ohio gave out more speeding tickets last year than any other state so that shows you how bad it is here. Michigan people don't even care thats for sure, whenever I go to Detroit i set cruise on 80 and just fly and still get passed up I-75. Ha only takes about 45 minutes from Detroit to Toledo

In 2009, Ohio had the 7th most fatal crashes in the country.

That's misleading, we live in a very populated state. Look at the fatality rate to really get an idea of whether or not the state is overly dangerous, for instance 3.5% of crashes in Nevada were fatal while Ohio was only at 1%

So what? It's all relative based on how many people live in the state.

Guess what rank Ohio is in population? 7th.

    http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2011/tables/11s0013.pdf

It makes SENSE for Ohio to have the 7th most fatal accidents.

Edit: I did some number crunching in Excel...Ohio is the 15th (best) in terms of best accidents per millions of people ratio. Out of a million people, there were 0.8 deaths in car accidents.

"Best" state was Massachusetts (.5 deaths) per millions of people
Worst state was Wyoming (ironically, also ranked 50th in population) with almost 2.5 deaths per million people

Also, fuck you for making me re-learn Excel to prove you wrong.

Drove autobahn once from Cologne Germany to border of Netherland......problem was going roughly 125-130 on autobahn...then trying to stay at the speed limit of ( I think) 65 mph once you cross the border. The Netherlands use freaking speeding cameras. So 6 months after getting back to the states I get a speeding ticket in the mail from the dept of motor vehicles ( or whatever it is called in the Netherlands) for equivalent of 250 us dollars...........now that sucked..

I-71 is just crawling compared to those other states due to this it seems. Plus, you have to be going insanely fast to get a ticket in the southern states.....I was going 85 in Georgia and looked in my mirror as a Statey was coming up behind me. He jumped out one lane and flew right past me without even a thought of pulling me over it seemed.

I got pulled over in West Virginia on one of those long downhill stretches in the mountains. I had to be goin almost 90. The cop just told me to keep it under 80 and didn't even give me a written warning.

It's basic math....If the average speed is 5mph more, it's that many more cars that can "occupy" a given piece of road in an hour - faster speed=higher throughput. But there may also be something to be said for the slow pokes who are more comfortable driving in the left lane, and slowing things down, with speed limits at 65 as opposed to 70.

Facts are meaningless, people can come up with statistics to prove anything. 14% of people know that.

You failed to see the point I was trying to make. The fact that Ohio has the 7th most fatalities is a meaningless statistic.

75 MPH is the speed limit here in North Dakota. If you are driving 70 you will get ran over. My cruise is usually set between 82 & 86.
