Is it getting loud yet? Official 2011 OC Cicada Thread
-
earwigDamn cicadas are starting to get loud around here and they're moving their way north. Gonna be seeing them empty carcass shells all over the trees pretty soon. You see or heard any of them yet?
-
coyotes22Its the only thing that will be heard in this thread.
-
coyotes22Called it
*crickets* -
LJI've heard them a bit, but mainly seen the dogs running around with them in their mouths
-
power iI've heard them and they always remind me of two-a-days. They are driving my dog nuts.
-
THE4RINGZI noticed the noise level to be a little higher than usual this past week when I am outside in the evening.
-
Curly JI haven't heard any here in the Cincy area.
-
thavoiceHeard plenty of locusts in our area, but that is typically normal.
Is it that time again for the cicada? Wasnt it like very 12 years or whatever? -
Scarlet_BuckeyeHave heard them LOUD and clear this year. I happen to like them. They always start days before/after the 4th of July.

Cicadas actually are around every year, but each batch of them takes several years to crawl out of the ground. They are certainly worse in some years though. -
4cards...heard them yesterday and they were pretty loud.
-
Curly JLast time they were bad here was the Brood X back in 2004. Those are on a 17 year cycle and due back in 2021. I actually got to see quite a few coming out their 'shell'. (molting)

I see. I did a quick search. Some are def only like 13-17 years but there are others -
Gardens35Just started hearing them 4-5 days ago.
-
gerb13190 days til frost is the folk lore.
I remember a while back scraping them off the trees at my grandparents by the hundreds. -
bradmaynard
That is an eastern cicada killer wasp and they are all over my backyard for some reason this year. No noise from cicadas, but I think I'd rather have the noise than those death burrows all over the place. -

I've had those things the past couple of summers....how is someone holding them? I've heard them as sand hornets....all over golf course ...and don't sting? -
bradmaynardread they are pretty docile, though I doubt I'll be getting close enough to find out. those are dead from the looks of the right one.
