Where to sell jewelry other than Craigslist?

  • mucalum49
Soooo after living together for a year I've decided to end things with my girlfriend. I am in possession of an engagement ring that was never used. I bought it late last year and things started to go down hill shortly after and I never gave it to her.

I've heard pawn shops will low ball you and that the best options are eBay or Craigslist. I was curious if anyone else knew of a good way to get a fair price for this thing...

not sure if there are any other options besides the 3 you mentioned.

That's what I was afraid of. I just feel I'll either get ripped off or it may be a time consuming process.

I take it you didnt keep the receipt/can't take it back where you purchased it for a refund. Bummer, but more than likely no one wants the style of ring you bought/etc...

Sounds like a losing situation. Sorry things didn't work out for you.

    Good luck in the future.

If you are going to sell it and want to get "top dollar," you need to have it appraised and all that shit.

I remember on Family Matters when Harriette Winslow found out that Carl had bought her ring for another woman.

I don't recommend doing that. Tough situation man. I hope you get something out of it.

Get it appraised from a jeweler and list it in the classified section of you local paper. Don't take it to a pawn shop, you will get about 1/5 of the value.

Keep the ring. You can use the same diamond and have it set in another ring when another girl comes along. If she doesn't like that, find another woman and be thankful; you just saved yourself a lot of headaches.

You could always trade it for tattoos :)

You overpaid for it when you bought it retail. Everyone does. Diamonds arent worth what they charge and what the quote you it's worth... it's about half of that. Take your losses and move on. If you get half of what you paid for it, you did extremely well.

you should be able to get your money back in trade from the place you bought it.. some places will give you store credit others make you double the purchase price. If your interested check it out

Thanks for all the feedback. I was thinking about keeping it but of our posessions I literally just have my clothes, 40" Sony TV and a new knife set I bought from Calphalon through our employee purchase program. I have no furniture, cookware, etc... I was hoping to use money from the ring to buy that sort of stuff. I'll probably get it appraised and just start listing it everywhere/anywhere I can.

I've bought two rings in my lifetime. The first was from an antique shop in Savannah, GA. Went there on vaca, she loved it. Since I live in Ohio, I didn't have the time to have someone look at it before I bought it. I called the guy and had it mailed to me, did it all via phone, paid $800 for it. That was the sticker. I was 24 (I think) and was dumber than I am now, so didn't think about him being a crook. When it arrived, I immediately had it appraised/cleaned. Took it to two different places... $100-$150. That is what they told me it was valued at too, not what they'd pay. I was immediately pissed, called the guy on the phone and cussed him out, and all he said was, "Hey, it's the one she wanted." Lesson learned there. It ended, sold it for its weight and got a whopping $75 out of it.

Current wife... We went to a place called Rogers & Hollands. Good diamonds. They have a policy that if you keep up with the cleanings, they will give you the cost of the rings + appreciation towards an upgrade. I think that was the same for a trade-in, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'll just have to echo what Zwick said. If you can get half what you paid, good luck.

Definitely find out its true value in gold/diamonds. Did you get specs with it when you purchased? We got a spec card with all the details with our purchase.

It does suck that you won't get out of your ring what you put into it, but in the long run you will be better off financially getting out of the relationship now if you think it's not going to work out.

You might try asking at jewelry stores to see if they know of anyone who buys rings. They may know someone. I think the paper and craigslist are probably your best bets after you've had it appraised.

Yeah I still have my spec card. Funny you mentioned Savannah in your first post, that's where she's moving...

I'd go back to your original place of purchase. See what they will give you. They may allow you to trade for full value. If so, get that in writing, and wait until you need it down the road, or just see what they'll give you for it.

If it's certified you should be able to get back close to what you paid for it at a jeweler, at least for the diamond. Then take the band to a cash for gold place. Go to a couple and take the best deal.

No way. It's not worth anything unles they're selling it. The over-inflated number you pay for it won't come close to what its worth or what they'll give you for it.
